Summer Beauty Issue:
Vibrance, Glow & Confidence
By Faathima Abdoor
Makeup: This summer is all about color that pops! Swap neutrals for playful tones, think sunset corals, tropical pinks, ocean blues, and golden shimmer.
Eyes: Try pastel liners or bold metallic shadows in teal, peach, or rose gold.
Lips: Juicy shades like hot pink, tangerine, or watermelon red bring instant radiance.
Cheeks: A coral or bronze blush adds warmth and glow.
Pro tip: Lock in your look with a setting spray because summer heat should only melt hearts, not makeup!

Perfume Picks:Light, fresh, and unforgettable summer calls for scents that feel like sunshine.
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue – crisp, citrusy, and seaside chic.
Chanel Chance Eau Tendre – soft floral with a modern feminine twist.
Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh – youthful, fruity, and flirty.
YSL Libre – for confident, bold summer nights.
(noted from perfume experts at Arc Store)

Skincare: Hydrate, protect, and glow. Use a gel-based moisturizer, broad-spectrum SPF 50, and a cooling mist to refresh your skin. Keep your makeup remover gentle and exfoliate weekly for smooth, sun-kissed skin.
Confidence: Wear your glow proudly your smile, your energy, your color.
Vibrance starts from within.
A Summer of Renewal
Where Healing Meets Transformation…
by Amiena Ally, Wellness Loft
Summer is more than a season; it is a feeling. It is sunlight spilling through open windows, barefoot walks on warm earth, and laughter carried on a soft breeze. At Wellness Loft, we believe this season invites us to embrace the full spectrum of life: vibrant, radiant and alive.
This is the time to let go of the weight of the past year, to breathe deeply, and to make space for the new. Just as nature blooms into full colour, we too can step into our most authentic and confident selves.

Healing Through Conscious Living
Healing through conscious living is about embracing mindfulness and intentionality in every aspect of life. It involves becoming aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions, and making choices that align with your well-being. By living consciously, we can release stress, heal emotional wounds, and cultivate a deeper connection to ourselves and others. This approach encourages self-compassion, balance, and presence, creating a foundation for both inner peace and growth. When we choose to live with intention, we empower ourselves to heal naturally and sustainably, fostering resilience and vitality along the way.
Here are simple yet powerful ways to begin healing through greater awareness.

- Start with Stillness
Begin your day with mindful moments, just five minutes of deep breathing, gentle stretching, or quiet reflection. This practice grounds you, eases stress, and sets a calm tone for the hours ahead.
- Eat with Awareness
Make mealtime sacred. Turn off distractions, savour each bite, and listen to your body’s cues. Conscious eating not only supports digestion but also reconnects you with the joy of nourishing yourself.
- Reconnect with Nature
Step outside and let the natural world remind you of your own rhythms. A barefoot walk, a quiet hike, or simply sitting under a tree can calm the mind and restore emotional balance.
- Nurture Conscious Connections
Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. Practice deep listening, speak your truth gently, and be present in your relationships, authentic connection is deeply healing.

Embracing Colour, Confidence and Joy.
This summer, let your world bloom in full colour. Allow yourself to step out of the shadows of routine and into the brightness of possibility. It is about feeling comfortable in your own skin, trusting the rhythm of your journey, and knowing that you are enough exactly as you are.
Colour has its own quiet magic, the golden warmth of sunlight, the calming blues of open skies, the joyful burst of wildflowers in bloom. When we surround ourselves with colour, we awaken the senses and remind the soul to play again.

Confidence begins in those small, brave choices. Saying yes to what feels right, wearing what expresses your spirit, speaking gently but truthfully. It’s not about perfection, but presence. And joy, the most natural of all emotions, flows easily when we let ourselves be fully here… laughing freely, moving lightly, and noticing beauty in the simplest moments.
So this summer, live vibrantly. Vibrance is not just about how you look; it is about how you feel. Let colour guide you, let confidence root you, and let joy remind you that every day is a chance to begin again, brighter, bolder, and beautifully alive
Your New Chapter Starts Here
Let this be the season you choose yourself. Choose peace. Choose radiance. Choose to live in vibrant colour. Come and experience the gentle power of healing, and allow your story to unfold with confidence, joy and purpose.
At Wellness Loft, we do not simply offer therapies. We hold space for your personal evolution. Whether you are letting go of the stress of the past year or setting intentions for a new chapter, we are here to walk that path with you.

Western psychologist vs Islamic psychologist
Why Western Psychology, Coaching and Therapy Often Don’t Work for the Muslim Heart
Dear brother and sister, have you ever felt that, after all your counselling, reading, or therapy, something still feels empty inside? That’s because most Western psychology and coaching methods look at you only as a mind and a body, and not as a soul.
As Muslims, we know that we are more than our thoughts or emotions. Allah created us with a ruh (spirit), a qalb (heart), and a nafs (self). True healing happens when all these parts are in harmony, when our hearts remember Allah and our souls are at peace.
The late Professor Malik Badri, known as the father of Islamic Psychology, explained this beautifully. He said that many Muslims have fallen into ‘the lizard’s hole’, copying Western psychology without realising that it leaves out the most important part of who we are:
Our relationship with Allah. Western methods can help in some ways, but they can never replace the spiritual wisdom of our beautiful, wisdom-filled deen.

So, how do we heal in an Islamic way?
Through simple, heart-based practices that reconnect us with Allah:
- Tazkiyah al-Nafs: the cleansing of the heart from pride, anger, jealousy, and ego.
- Muraqabah: being aware that Allah sees and knows us at all times.
- Dhikr and Dua: remembering Allah and speaking to Him from the heart.
- Salaah: grounding ourselves in daily connection and surrender.
- Tafakkur: reflecting on our lives, lessons, and Allah’s signs around us.
True healing isn’t found in methods that ignore your Creator. It’s found in returning to Him, in remembering, reflecting, and realigning your heart with the One who made it.

THE FADING PALETTE:
Why is colour practically and mentally disappearing from our lives?
By Dr Manuela Pirola
Summer has always been celebrated as the season of colour: golden sunlight, deep green leaves, bright flowers and vivid skies. But while nature still bursts with vibrancy, our environments and even our minds tell a different story. From the neon windbreakers and turquoise cars of the 80s and 90s to today’s sea of black, white and grey, colour has quietly faded from our daily lives. Is this merely shifting taste, a search for calm in a fast-paced world, the comfort of neutrality or something deeper?

The Rise of Neutrals: A Historical Perspective
The shift wasn’t sudden. Over time, bright reds, blues and greens in industries like automotive and fashion gave way to silver, black and white. Interiors followed, adopting minimalist, neutral palettes that promised “timelessness.”

Globalisation and Productivity: The Universal Appeal
Globalisation pushed brands toward universally acceptable, non-risky colours. Neutral tones feel safe, culturally broad, and unlikely to offend. At the same time, a productivity-driven culture favours environments that seem calm, focused and distraction-free, further reinforcing the dominance of beige, grey and black.
Does Neutral Suit Everyone? The Case for Colour
While neutrals can be elegant, they don’t serve everyone equally. Colour psychology reveals that different hues evoke distinct emotions and impact our mood and overall well-being. Neuroscience also reminds us that colour stimulates the brain, energising or calming us in ways a monochrome environment simply cannot. Too much neutrality can create monotony, even emotional flatness.
Reintroducing colour doesn’t mean returning to the excesses of the past. It means choosing hues that resonate with your personality and needs. A bright scarf, a bold pair of shoes or a single painted wall can shift how you feel. At home, a vibrant cushion, artwork, or even a colourful mug can refresh your space. Plants, flowers and natural textures also restore warmth and visual richness.
Beyond objects, seek colour in experiences: local markets, time outdoors, or simply noticing how light shifts throughout the day. The more attention you give to colour, the more it returns not only to your surroundings but to your perspective.

Colour is emotion, energy and expression. Gifting colour, especially during the festive season, can mean offering joy, creativity and serenity: a painting, a bouquet, or any chromatic experience that rekindles wonder. Bringing colour back into someone’s life is a reminder of beauty, warmth and possibility.

A life drained of colour dulls our well-being. By intentionally inviting colour back into our world, we create a more vibrant, stimulating and fulfilling life. It’s time to embrace the full spectrum and rediscover the joy colour brings for a brighter future.
Shaa’ista Kathree and the Rise of Mima South Africa
The energy behind MIMA
South Africa’s empowered sisterhood
by Farah Sheik
Shaa’ista Kathree is a South African marketer, influencer, and founder of Mima South Africa, a women’s empowerment community and podcast dedicated to inspiring creativity, confidence, and connection among women. Based in Durban, she is also a devoted single mother of two. Kathree navigates a full-time career in FMCG marketing alongside content creation, a balance that has earned her admiration both online and in person. In this interview, she opens up about how motherhood, marketing, and being a ‘master of good vibes’ guide her approach to life and leadership.
I had the pleasure, on behalf of Covered Magazine, of sitting down with Shaa’ista to learn more about the woman behind Mima – her story, her vision, and the energy she’s bringing to our community.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I’m a proud single mom to two kids – Yusuf (14) and Yara (11). I work in FMCG marketing full-time, and I’m also a social media influencer. Most recently, I launched Mima – a women’s empowerment platform that is dedicated to inspiring creativity, confidence, and community amongst women.

You are a ‘Mom, Marketer, and Master of good vibes’. Can you explain what these titles mean?
Being a mom is who I am – it’s where I’ve learned patience, resilience, and love that fuels everything I do. Yusuf and Yara are my greatest teachers, and motherhood constantly reminds me of the importance of leading by example.
As a marketer, I get to turn ideas into impact. I love building brands that connect with people’s lives – understanding what moves them, inspires them, and earns their loyalty.
And as a master of good vibes, I’m intentional about bringing light, positivity, and authenticity wherever I go – both online and in real life.
Together, those three parts of me shape the way I show up in the world – with purpose, passion, and a whole lot of heart.
You emphasise positivity on your social platforms. What practices help to spread that positive energy?
I try my best to lead with love, light, and kindness in everything I do. It’s a simple intention, but it shapes how I show up in my interactions, my content, and my platform. By approaching people and situations with positivity, I hope to inspire others to do the same and create a space where everyone feels seen, supported, and uplifted.
What does the name ‘Mima’ mean to you?
Mima is named after my Mom, Shamima, and it’s what I’ve learnt from her and my own journey as a woman, when it comes to how Mima South Africa was born.
Why did you choose to start your podcast by telling your own story?
I chose to open the podcast with my own story because I wanted to be genuine and transparent from the start. By sharing my personal journey, including the highs and lows, I set the tone for honesty and vulnerability. It helps listeners connect with me and see that Mima is grounded in real-life experience.

From looking at your content, Mima is built on a set of pillars. Can you explain what these pillars are?
We base everything we do on these 6 pillars:
1. Be your own Finance Bro (Finance)
2. Main Character Energy (Confidence)
3. Feel, Don’t Filter (Healing)
4. Bloom Baby (Vision)
5. Naked Truths (Self-love)
6. It’s Business Babe (Business)
How do these pillars influence the topics on your podcast?
I use the pillars as a framework for the podcast. Each episode’s theme is inspired by one or more of these pillars, ensuring we cover a range of empowerment topics. For example, an episode about money management would connect with the ‘Finance Bro’ pillar, while a discussion about self-confidence might reflect ‘Main Character Energy.’
What has been the most rewarding part of building Mima so far?
The most rewarding part was people reaching out to say that they may not know what Mima is about, but they know they need it. If I can help one person have a better life and reach their potential through Mima, then that, for me, is a picture of success.
What kind of audience are you hoping to reach with Mima South Africa?
Mima is not a faith based platform. It’s for everyone, from a stay-at-home mom to a corporate girly to a small business owner. It’s for anyone who wants to grow and learn and better themselves, while having a whole lot of fun. We also are not a men-bashing platform, as I know many good men, and I’ll be sharing their stories so we can learn from them, too.
What message do you hope people take from following your page?
I hope every person who interacts with the Mima brand is met with love and light. I hope that they leave better because of it.

Through your posts, you clearly aim to inspire others. Can you share a piece of advice that has helped you succeed?
A few pieces of advice that have stuck with me and changed my life:
– Back yourself: Know that you can and you will.
– Consistency: small wins = a big impact in the long run.
– Just start: it doesn’t have to be perfect.
– Take small breaks: pockets of peace in times of chaos.

Kathree’s story shows how passion and positivity can turn challenges into community. As a marketer, she knows how to build a brand, as a mother, she has learned patience and resilience, and as an influencer, she spreads kindness and motivation. Her final message is one of empowerment: believe in yourself, take the first step, and stay consistent. “If I can help even one person improve their life through Mima,” she says, “then that is success.” Above all, she wants every woman who follows her journey to feel the confidence to become her own hero.
Can you share with us your social media details and contact details for people who want to know more about you and Mima South Africa?
My Instagram handle is @mima_southafrica, and you can email me at hello@shaaistakathree.co.za.

Single
and
Shining
Choose Joy before Nikaah
by Saddica Berriche
Somewhere between “When are you getting married?” and “You’re next, insha’Allah,” single Muslim women forgot how to celebrate themselves. But here’s the secret: singlehood isn’t a waiting room, it’s the main event.
There’s a quiet magic in being single. You get to design your life, your habits, your dreams, all without compromise. You can binge skincare routines, start a side hustle, or study Qur’an at sunrise without anyone asking why dinner isn’t ready.
Our communities sometimes frame marriage as the final destination. But you were complete before anyone joined your journey. Allah didn’t create halves; He created wholes who meet in wholeness.
Being single is your becoming era, the glow-up no one talks about.
This is when you learn what peace feels like, what faith sounds like, and what confidence looks like on you. It’s when you stop chasing validation and start embodying purpose.
“You were complete before anyone joined your journey”

Use this season to build yourself, spiritually, emotionally, and financially. Fall in love with your independence, your faith, your skin. When you invest in yourself, marriage stops being a rescue plan and becomes a reward for the woman you’ve already become.
And yes, loneliness visits sometimes. That’s okay, it’s a human reminder to connect, not a divine punishment. Fill the gap with community, sisterhood, and gratitude. The same Allah who writes love stories also writes self-love stories.

“You’re not waiting to be chosen – you’re already chosen by Allah”

5 ways to shine while single
Romanticising your routine – morning walks, good skincare, fresh flowers
Start a passion project/study something new
Build financial independence
Travel or explore new spots solo
Strengthen your dua game – alignment before attachment.
So, when that one aunty asks, “Still not married?” smile and say, “No, just thriving.”
You’re not waiting to be chosen — you’re already chosen. By Allah. By destiny. By growth.
You are single, shining, and spectacularly whole.

The Unmasking
of a Wolf in
Sheep’s Clothing:
When Social Status Is Used to Fabricate a False Image

They say every marriage is a story, yet some epilogues begin far sooner than expected. Mine unravelled within the first two weeks, not through arguments, but through the painful clarity that I had married someone who understood nothing about love, emotional connection, communication, or the responsibilities of a husband.

It was astonishing that the man I married, let’s call him O.K., was so respected in the community. Introduced by someone I trusted, I gave the idea of marriage a chance. Our religion encourages not delaying Nikaah unnecessarily, yet being rushed into a wedding three weeks after the proposal should have been the first red flag. But Allah’s plan unfolds with purpose, and our Nikaah took place on a beautiful Sunday, the 21st of September 2025, surrounded by loved ones, joy, and promises that would barely last seven weeks.

A Honeymoon That Never Existed
Red flags surfaced in the first week. While on our “honeymoon,” I realised I was invisible to the one person meant to be my companion. He happily made memories with others, helping non-mahrams and offering them rides, while ignoring my own needs. It was my first taste of how little I mattered to him. Returning home, the distance grew: no emotional connection, no shared meals, no inclusion in his family. I was spoken to like a friend, not a wife, and treated as an inconvenience when it came to even simple companionship.
I also learnt the painful consequence of opening my heart too honestly; my vulnerabilities were used against me through manipulation and twisted reasoning.
The Revelation of a Convenience Marriage
It soon became clear this marriage was never meant to be a partnership. To him, marriage was about convenience being served, while continuing his bachelor lifestyle unchanged. Calls stopped. Conversation stopped. Even asking why he married me resulted in shocking responses: “I don’t know if marriage is for me,” and “I need time to think.”

Yet I still sought help, because Nikaah holds immense value for me. I contacted an Aalim for guidance after he failed to do so. The counselling exposed three truths: one-sided effort cannot save a marriage; ignoring advice from a learned person leaves no hope; and a spouse who fabricates issues to play victim has no intention of working on the marriage. His father’s unwavering support, without any attempt to understand the truth, only confirmed the cycle of immaturity.

By the third session, it was clear he wanted out. His idea of “sacrifice” was skipping gym or pool night, not working on our marriage. Agreements were made for talaaq and the collection of my belongings.
The Final, Despicable Act
When my parents and I arrived to pack, O.K., smug and prepared, he announced he was breaking every agreement. He demanded that everything be packed in two hours and declared the talaaq effective the next day. His father arrived within minutes, defending him with the claim that “words aren’t set in stone.” Both men then sat watching as we packed, moving about like guards. It was degrading, but clarifying. If a father cannot teach his son honour, responsibility, or respect, how could that son ever take care of a wife?
Leaving the keys behind, I silently thanked Allah for revealing their true character – something the masjid and gym crowd would never see.

The End You Earned, Not I
O.K. never earned respect or acknowledgement. He sold an image with words alone. His only honest admission was that he failed at marriage – because he absolutely did.

The Betrayal of a “Sister”
Equally painful was the behaviour of the woman who introduced us. Someone I saw as a sister responded only with “I don’t get involved in family politics” and “whatever is khair.” No dua, no checking in, no empathy. Sisterhood should never be selective. When loyalty disappears at the first sign of hardship, it reveals the truth of a person’s heart.
Why I Write This
I share my story to awaken conscience, to warn those entering marriage, and to highlight the importance of true sisterhood. You might forget this marriage lasted only seven weeks, not years—but the lessons remain valuable:
• Red flags don’t vanish after Nikaah.
• Public reputation does not equal private character.
• Families sometimes present their sons as “picture-perfect”, hoping a wife will fix them, this is not your job.
• Dress code and mosque attendance do not determine character.
• Acting macho and breaking promises only disgraces one’s own name.
• If you don’t understand Nikaah, educate yourself, don’t make your spouse your teacher.
• Trust your gut; intuition is often revelation in motion.
• Communication, maturity, accountability, and effort are non-negotiable.
• Marriage requires teamwork, sacrifice, and genuine presence, not emotional absenteeism.

A Final Plea
Can we return to the Qur’an and Sunnah as the foundation of marriage?
The Prophet (SAW) said, “The best of you is the one who is best to his wife.”
Why is this still so difficult for people to embody?
Can we restore the beauty, dignity, and sanctity of Nikaah?
Can we choose selflessness over ego?
Can we please change the narrative of marriage again?

DMK PARAMEDICAL SKIN REVISION:
If you’ve tried product after product or treatment after treatment without seeing real, lasting improvement in your skin, DMK Paramedical Skin Revision is the game-changing solution you’ve been searching for. DMK isn’t just another facial line – it’s a clinically designed system that works with your skin’s natural biology to correct dysfunction, restore balance, and create visible, long-term results. This is the treatment clients turn to when they want true transformation, not temporary fixes.
DMK stands apart because it doesn’t mask symptoms – it revises them. Most skin concerns, whether acne, pigmentation, aging,
scarring, or sensitivity, are rooted in an imbalance within the skin’s structure. DMK’s approach targets these imbalances directly.
Guided by the philosophy to Remove, Rebuild, Protect, and Maintain, DMK treatments use advanced, botanical-based formulations
that re-educate the skin to function at its highest potential.

The star of the DMK experience is its world-renowned Enzyme Therapy. Unlike traditional facials that only treat the top layer of skin, Enzyme Therapy works deep within the tissue, stimulating vital processes that keep the skin functioning optimally. As the mask tightens, it activates circulation, oxygenation, and lymphatic drainage – almost like a workout for your skin. This action triggers a process called reverse osmosis, flushing out impurities and delivering fresh, oxygen-rich nutrients to every cell. The result? Skin that looks immediately lifted, energized, and incredibly radiant.
But what truly makes DMK so convincing is its ability to rebuild what’s been lost. Over time, stress, environment, and aging weaken
the skin’s barrier, causing dehydration, inflammation, and sluggish cell turnover. DMK formulations are packed with amino acids,
peptides, and powerful actives that rebuild and strengthen this barrier, helping the skin behave like it did when it was younger – healthier, firmer, clearer, and more resilient.

Every DMK treatment plan is completely customized. No two skins require the same approach, and DMK recognizes that. Your skin is assessed in detail so that each step – professional treatments and home care – is tailored precisely to your needs. This personalized
strategy ensures you don’t just get short-term “glow”; you get long-term, measurable improvement you can see and feel.
Clients choose DMK because it delivers what they’ve always wanted: confidence in their skin. Whether you’re struggling with a chronic condition or simply want the healthiest, most luminous complexion of your life, DMK is a powerful, scientifically engineered path to results that speak for themselves.
If you’re ready for real change – skin that looks naturally vibrant, balanced, and truly renewed – DMK Paramedical Skin Revision is the solution that finally makes it possible.

Contractual Clarity
don’t drop the pen in haste.
By Mariam E Teladia
In an increasingly complex world, the significance of contracts in both personal and professional spheres cannot be overstated.
Contracts serve as foundational documents that outline the terms of agreements, ensuring that all parties involved have a clear understanding of their obligations and rights. Many individuals often overlook the importance of fully understanding these legal instruments before affixing their signatures.
The clarity of a contract is paramount; ambiguous language can lead to misunderstandings and disputes that may have been easily avoided with precise wording. This underscores the necessity for individuals to approach contracts not merely as formalities but as critical components of their legal interactions.

However, the act of signing a contract is often approached with haste, leading individuals to overlook critical details that may have lasting implications.
Ambiguous language or vague terms can create confusion and disputes down the line. Therefore, it is essential for individuals to not only read but also comprehend the contents of any contract before affixing their signature.
Understanding one’s legal rights within a contractual agreement further empowers individuals to make informed decisions and protect themselves from potential exploitation or unfavourable conditions. Many people enter into contracts without fully grasping their implications, which can result in unintended consequences that could have been avoided with proper diligence.
Furthermore, a comprehensive grasp of one’s legal rights within a contract is essential for ensuring fair treatment and protection against potential exploitation, which can leave them vulnerable in contentious situations. As such, it becomes imperative to advocate for greater awareness regarding both the clarity of contractual language and an individual’s rights therein.

First and foremost, one should consult a registered attorney, obtain the necessary legal advice and clarity. Whereby the attorney would thoroughly read the entire contract, provide clarity on each and every clause.
Each clause in a contract serves a purpose, and missing even minor details can lead to significant consequences. For instance, terms regarding payment schedules, obligations of each party, or termination clauses, breach of agreement, are all critical components that need careful scrutiny.

By dedicating time to consult with an attorney, in effort to read every section comprehensively, individuals can better understand their rights and responsibilities under the agreement, and further protect their rights prior to committing. This will prevent future losses, leading the individual towards a clear understanding and positive legal standing.

Na-Shukr and privilege problems/ Where Grace meets Grit
by Soraya Schroeder
We live in an era where sometimes our biggest problems warrants a question mark at the end. “The Wi-Fi is slow.” “Uber Eats forgot the extra sauce.” “My phone battery dies so fast!” In the grand scheme of things they’re basically privilege problems. Yet somehow, they frustrate us enough to ruin our mood, or worse, make us forget the countless blessings that quietly carry us through the day.
This is where the concept of na-shukr creeps in. At its root, it’s about ingratitude. Not just the absence of saying “thank you,” but the way we begin to take blessings for granted. And the strange thing about human beings? The more we’re given, the quicker we become ungrateful. Our great-grandparents saw a single loaf of bread as a treasure to stretch for a family of ten, and here we are, sighing at a fully stocked fridge because nothing looks appetizing or actually requires some effort to put together.

Modern luxury have spoiled us to the point where resilience feels like an outdated skill. A cracked phone screen is a “tragedy.” Waiting an extra five minutes in traffic feels unbearable. But think about it: do these little “disasters” not reveal just how much ease we actually live in? They’re signs that life has gotten so comfortable that the tiniest inconveniences now shake us. It’s not that we’re weak but rather that we’ve let comfort dull our resourcefulness.

And of course, the nafs and shaitaan’s whispers play their part here. They train our eyes to zoom in on the single flaw and completely overlook the mountain of blessings right beside it. Sometimes our minds even create difficulties out of thin air, almost as if they need to validate the comfort we live in. We forget that both ease and tests are from Allah. That blessings don’t make us entitled, and struggles aren’t punishments, but each is a chance to turn back to Him with shukr and sabr.
Na-shukr does more than rob us of gratitude; it robs us of grit. When every need is met instantly;streamed, shipped, or delivered;we forget the quiet dignity of patience, of making do, of figuring things out. And with that, we lose the very muscles that carried our ancestors through hardship with strength and grace.

The cure isn’t about guilt-tripping ourselves into romanticizing struggle. It’s about flipping the lens. Next time your coffee order is wrong, instead of muttering, “Why me?”, maybe smile and think, “What a privilege that this is my problem today.” or be open to the opportunity to try something new. Suddenly, it becomes less about what’s missing and more about noticing the abundance already here.

Shukr (gratitude) is not passive,it’s active. It’s training ourselves to look at life and say: Even this inconvenience is a reminder that I live in ease. And when we do, we don’t just become more thankful,we become more resourceful, resilient, and able to push through the real storms when they come.
So maybe the Wi-Fi buffer is not an enemy after all. Maybe it’s a reminder to breathe, to slow down, and to realize how much we actually have. And perhaps, in that moment of annoyance, we can turn na-shukr into shukr, silence the whispers of ingratitude, and reclaim both our gratitude and our grit.
Curiosity, Knowledge, and Courage:
The Responsibility of Pleasure
Dr Mariam B. Khan
For far too many women, particularly those shaped by religious, cultural, and/or colonial narratives, sexual pleasure has been framed as dangerous, dirty, or indulgent. Women are conditioned to be desirable but shamed for desiring. Conditioned to be available but discouraged from initiating.
This conditioning leaves many women unsure of what they want sexually and guilty for wanting anything at all. Many have become disconnected from their own bodies. They are too afraid to look, to touch, to explore, to appreciate. Too afraid to seek medical help. Fighting silent battles, enduring unnecessary pain. For some, that pain is physical, manifesting in conditions like vaginismus, a treatable condition often rooted in trauma, fear, or cultural shame. Yet many women suffer in silence, internalising dysfunction as personal failure. Shamed for vocalising concerns, even as adherents to religions that encourage consultation and healing. But silence is not strength, and pain is not a rite of passage.

Across cultures, colonial legacies have reinforced this silence. Colonial powers imposed rigid binaries onto traditions that honoured female sensuality: virgin or whore, modest or immoral. Female pleasure was erased from medical discourse, religious interpretation, and public life. These residues continue to shape how women are taught to fear their own bodies, mistrust their desire, and perform intimacy rather than participate in it.
Ironically, like religiosity or piety, sexual pleasure is not something that happens to you or that you wait for. It is something you cultivate. It is not something you outsource to your partner, passively waiting to be “unlocked” by their smouldering eyes and searing touch. It requires responsibility, so you stop performing and start participating.
It begins with having essential conversations with yourself before you share your body with anyone else. It requires identifying and acknowledging the harmful narratives you have inherited about desire and sexuality and unlearn them so you may learn new ways of being. Mostly, it requires curiosity, courage, and communication. Because pleasure is not one-size-fits-all. It is a personal language.

For example, for neurodivergent women, those with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder and/or sensory processing differences, desire and sexuality may be experienced differently. Depending on the state of the nervous system, external stimuli may be experienced as hypersensitivity or under-responsiveness. This can shape how arousal is experienced, either delayed or heightened. Understanding your neurotype helps you communicate your needs and co-create intimacy that feels safe, stimulating, and authentic.
Other realities exist. For example, in Unani medicine, each person is governed by a unique mizaj (temperament), shaped by the balance of four humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Women with a phlegmatic temperament are characterised by coolness and moisture. Unani medicine theory suggests sexual vitality thrives on internal heat. The cold, moist nature of the phlegmatic temperament can slow circulation, dampen metabolic heat, and suppress the body’s readiness for sexual intimacy.
Studies indicate that women with a phlegmatic temperament may be more susceptible to sexual dysfunction, particularly vaginal dryness and associated dyspareunia/painful intercourse, low libido, delayed arousal, and reduced sensitivity. For Unani Medicine doctors, understanding a person’s temperament is essential for diagnosing and treating. On a personal level, knowing your temperament helps you understand your body and share your truth. It allows you to advocate for your needs, to name your fears, ask for what you want, and receive what you deserve.
This is why your pleasure is your responsibility. Not your partner’s. Not your doctor’s. Not your therapist’s. Responsibility begins with asking: What arouses me? What makes me feel safe?

Sexual pleasure is more than touch techniques and positions. It is self-awareness. It is presence. It is the ability to say yes with your whole body, or no without guilt. It is safety. Safety to explore, to communicate, to experience. It is safety to accept that your sex life is not static, and will change as you go through different stages in life. The way you experience desire, connection, and pleasure will evolve. When you accept this truth, it becomes easier to explore, adapt, and stay connected to both your body and your partner’s body.

Pleasure begins when women stop performing and start participating. When they name inherited scripts that do not serve them, honour their temperament, and speak the language of their own bodies. Choosing curiosity over shame, knowledge over silence, and courage over compliance disrupts centuries of erasure. When women take responsibility for their pleasure, they do more than heal, they remember, they reimagine, and they restore what was never meant to be lost.

Aishah Letlala:
Stepping Into
Her Power
Covered Magazine has had the honour of walking alongside Limpho Aishah Letlala as she embraced one of the most defining chapters of her journey her role as a finalist in the Miss Curvylicious SA Pageant.
From the moment she entered the competition, Aishah held her modesty not as a limitation, but as a pillar of strength. She stepped into her power with grace, carrying her values confidently while navigating an environment that often expects otherwise. With supportive pageant directors who welcomed and respected her principles, Aishah moved through each stage with a sense of ease and authenticity.

When the auditorium echoed with “Contestant Number Four”, signalling the announcement of the Top 3, the energy shifted. The crowd erupted in applause, and in that life-pausing moment, Aishah’s world stood still. Hearing her name crowned as 2nd Princess was surreal, a testament to resilience, representation, and the beauty of staying true to who you are.
A Woman
Made
Whole.
In a world which praises people-pleasing, it may be challenging to hear that authentic sensuality and sexuality are only possible through strong boundaries, self-confidence and leaning into intuition. Much of what we’ve learned about femininity, like it being only demure submission, actually excludes women and indeed divorces us from taking any pleasure in the experience of being feminine as a whole. And it is a ‘whole’ – feminine is not just lip gloss and doe eyes. The experience of it is as vast as all women through the ages.
The link between boundaries, confidence and intuition and how it informs sensuality and sexuality is inextricable. If you cut the legs off one of those, the dynamic simply doesn’t dance as powerfully as it could; it becomes a trinket, something broken off and sold piece-meal as ‘marketing data’, pandering to the insecurities so many women suffer from these days.
The time has come to gather yourself to yourself.
The stronger your boundaries, the clearer your intuition.
You need confidence to assert – and most importantly, EMBODY – your boundaries.
Confidence, in turn, comes from being able to trust yourself; trusting that you’ll do what you say you’re going to do, which requires respecting and honouring the body; drinking water when you’re thirsty, resting when you’re tired, dressing in a way that’s comfortable for you as a start.
These practices will then become part of your boundaries.
We’ve come full circle.
Now your intuition becomes natural to you, becomes second nature. You begin to feel somatically what moves you and what gives you resistance because the sensing body is a gateway for intuition.

The Uncovering of Sensual Alchemy:
Exploring Desire & Sexuality
Something sacred unfolds when women gather. A unique electrical charge is created, a biological field where our parasympathetic systems begin to mirror one another, establishing an immediate sanctuary. In this space, women remember themselves and envision their future through the power of each other’s presence.

This profound gathering was the spirit behind Uncovering Sensual Alchemy: Exploring Desire and Sexuality, an inaugural event held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the beautiful Baluchi Restaurant. The event was the brave vision of three dynamic women who ventured to explore the complex realities of women’s pleasure.
The three co-creators who brought this vision to life are: Dr Mariam B Khan (Unani Medicine Doctor), Tasneem Ahmed Basha (Holistic Coach) and our Editor-in-Chief and Founder of Sense and Sensuality, Yesmien K-T.

They convened a diverse group of women to discuss a powerful truth: that addressing women’s sexuality and sensuality is much more complex than simply seeking “more pleasure.” True fulfilment requires less self-doubt, less handing over the responsibility of pleasure to a partner, and more self-awareness. The event was a source of deep nourishment, filled with both heartfelt laughter and moving tears, marking a vital first step in acknowledging the different lived realities of women.

This impactful day was made possible by the generous support of our principal sponsors: Nativa – Femagene, DMK Skincare, and ZenaChi. A massive shout-out also goes to all our giveaways and goody bag sponsors; your contribution added immense value to this event. To the women who made the conscious choice to prioritise their sexual health by showing up in all their authenticity and vulnerability: your participation was truly transformative.
Thank you for being part of this foundational moment. We are committed to continuing this vital conversation and look forward to welcoming you to our next event.
