Skincare: The Key to Flawless Makeup

Your Guide to Savvy Shopping:

Know Your Rights this Holiday Season

by Mariam E Teladia

The festive shopping season is here, and South African stores are pulling out all the stops to get us to buy. But as much as we love a good sale, it’s important to remember that being an informed shopper can save both money and headaches. Thanks to South Africa’s Consumer Protection Act (CPA) of 2008, you have rights that protect you against misleading practices, ensuring fair treatment and transparency from businesses.

What Does the CPA Do?

The CPA was created to promote a fair marketplace and protect consumers from shady practices. Before the CPA, consumer rights were vague, leaving us vulnerable. But today, with the CPA, every consumer in South Africa can shop with more confidence, knowing they have legal protections.

Your Key Rights as a Consumer

  1. Right to Safety and Quality: Products should be safe and of good quality. If something doesn’t work as promised, you’re entitled to a refund, repair, or replacement.
  2. Right to Fair Marketing: Misleading advertising and sneaky sales tactics (think bait-and-switch, false claims, or pyramid schemes) are not allowed. Advertisers must be honest and transparent.
  3. Right to Privacy: Tired of spammy messages? You have the right to opt out of unsolicited marketing and protect your personal information, in line with the POPI Act.
  4. Right to Full Disclosure: Companies must clearly disclose product details, pricing, terms, and any risks so you know exactly what you’re buying.
  5. Right to Choice: You’re free to choose among a range of products without pressure or deception, ensuring you’re in control of your purchasing decisions.
  6. Right to Fair and Honest Dealing: No one should be subjected to unfair treatment or discrimination. The CPA ensures equality in the marketplace.

What Responsibilities Do Businesses Have?Under the CPA, businesses must:

  • Provide accurate information about products and services.
  • Honour warranties and replace or repair defective products as necessary.
  • Resolve complaints fairly and efficiently.
  • Maintain product safety by conducting regular quality checks.

Shop Smart and Know Your Rights

When you’re out there shopping, remember that the CPA is on your side, ensuring you have a fair experience. Equip yourself with the knowledge to make informed purchases, avoid unnecessary risks, and, most importantly, enjoy the holiday shopping season with peace of mind.

Fragility and Resilience

exhibition By Ayesha Sultana

Ayesha Sultana’s “Fragility and Resilience” exhibition explores the balance between power and vulnerability in the 21st century, challenging traditional dichotomies. The exhibition addresses sustainability challenges in the modern world, emphasizing the importance of resilience.

In addition to showcasing Sultana’s hand-blown glass sculptures for the first time, the exhibition features her previous photographic experiments, freshly created oil paintings, watercolours on Japanese silk tissue, and works on clay-coated paper. By including Sultana’s sketchbooks, diaries, unfinished video, and artwork in progress, it also provides a unique look into her creative process.

The purpose of “Fragility and Resilience” is to lead viewers on an introspective and exploratory trip. Three sections make up the exhibition, each of which flows smoothly into the next. While viewing the display as a whole, visitors can fully immerse themselves in the distinctive features and subtle thematic elements of each body of work.

Sultana’s hand-blown glass sculptures at Ishara showcase the exhibition’s title and human body connection. Created using glassblower’s breath, they represent the conflict between brittleness and strength, resembling water droplets, organs, or air bubbles. The tight experience of each breath’s necessity for survival and risk to others during the epidemic is reflected in Sultana’s “Breath Count” series of sculptures with clay-coated paper marks.

The “Threshold” collection, created in 2008, features photos from her father’s death and his time in the Bangladesh Air Force.

The series explores the impact of time on bodies, architecture, and landscapes, with scratches representing the effects of erasure.

Using tissue paper as a poignant media, Sultana’s ‘Miasms’ and ‘Inhabiting Our Bodies’ series represent fluidity, ephemerality, and frailty. Stains, fluid pools, blood clots, and microscopic nuclei are among the life-affirming motifs evoked by these abstract pieces, which were influenced by feminist art techniques.

The display showcases Sultana’s creative process through sketchbooks, diaries, incomplete videos, and artwork in progress. It reveals the artist’s resiliency and willingness to accept the unknowable, showcasing her flexibility and openness in her artistic approach.

The Ishara Art Foundation is launching a public programme featuring artist talks, guided tours, and interactive workshops to enhance visitor engagement with an exhibition featuring works from various collections, supported by Barclays Private Bank and Carl F. Bucherer.

The Infiniti Collection is a contemporary modest fashion brand dedicated to redefining everyday style with a focus on sustainability, comfort, and elegance. Specializing in ready-to-wear collections, the brand offers versatile designs crafted for modern individuals who value modesty without compromising on fashion or functionality. Each piece in The Infiniti Collection is thoughtfully designed to blend timeless aesthetics with current trends, making it ideal for day-to-day wear.

How to Decode Your Man:

7 Tips to Reignite Masculine Energy in Your Relationship.

Ladies, let’s talk. Have you ever found yourself trying to figure out your man—like decoding some ancient, mysterious language? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Over the years, as women have embraced independence (go us!), many men have found themselves unintentionally stepping back from their traditional roles. It’s not that they don’t want to show up for us, but let’s face it—we’ve sent some mixed signals. We’ve shouted, “I’ve got this!” while secretly hoping for a knight in shining armor. And now, here we are, craving the very balance we might have unknowingly disrupted.

So, how do we restore harmony, celebrate our independence, and still inspire the gentleman within?

Here are 7 actionable tips to bring back that masculine spark while keeping things fun and real.

1. Show Appreciation

Everyone wants to feel valued, and men are no exception. Whether he fixes a leaky faucet or gives you his last fry, let him know you noticed. A simple “thank you” can go a long way in reminding him he’s important in your life.

2. Practice Gratitude

Be thankful for the big and small things he brings to the table—even if it’s just his company on the couch. Remember, you chose him for a reason, and focusing on the positives can strengthen your connection.

3. Embrace the “Knight in Shining Armor” Vibe

We know you’re perfectly capable of rescuing yourself (hello, 21st century!), but sometimes letting him take the lead or help out makes him feel needed and appreciated. Trust me, it’s not about weakness—it’s about partnership.

4. Include Him in Your World

Ever caught yourself unintentionally sidelining him during family dinners or outings with friends? Acknowledging his presence and including him in conversations signals that he matters—not just to you but in your social circles too.

5. Communicate Beyond the Basics

While “good morning” and “goodnight” are nice, deeper conversations build connection. A quick text like, “What was the best part of your day?” can spark dialogue. And yes, it’s often easier to start with texts if in-person chats feel daunting.

6. Do Something Thoughtful

Surprise him with his favorite meal, or gift him that gadget he’s been eyeing. Thoughtful gestures show you’re tuned into his likes and needs, and they make him feel cherished.

7. Communicate (Again)

Yes, it’s on this list twice because it’s that important. Open communication—whether it’s about the weather or your dreams for the future—is the foundation of any strong relationship. So, keep the dialogue flowing!

Final Thoughts

Relationships are all about balance. By showing appreciation, staying grateful, and fostering open communication, you can create a space where both partners feel valued, loved, and empowered. Now go ahead and give these tips a try—you might be surprised by the results!

Redefining Success

A Journey from Burnout to Empowerment

By Tania Cunningham – Fitness Maven

Growing up in Cape Town in an entrepreneurial household, I witnessed first-hand what it meant to work hard for everything. My parents put in endless hours to give us the best chance at life, and the adults around me lived with a “hustle” mentality. That became the framework I believed in too. I was taught that success came through grit, relentless hours, and a willingness to push until exhaustion.

Following this philosophy, I poured myself into my education, earned a science degree, and landed a job with the South African Police Service as a forensic scientist. Yet, despite all I had achieved, something was missing. I climbed the career ladder quickly but felt unfulfilled. Seeking more, I began taking courses in entrepreneurship and pursued an MBA. True to the “hustle” mindset, I was working full-time, consulting on the side, and building my own businesses—until I burned out, mentally and physically depleted.

For years, I ignored my health, sacrificed time with loved ones, and chased a vision of success. Then my father was diagnosed with cancer. In the hospital, he shared words I’ll never forget. Filled with regret, he told me he wished he’d found a better balance, that he hadn’t traded his health and family time for work. He was worried I was on the same path—and he was right.

His words sparked a profound shift. I committed to prioritizing my health—not just physically, but mentally too. I started exercising consistently, learning about nutrition, and focusing on building strength and confidence from within. For the first time, I felt powerful—not because of a title, degree, or accolade, but because I had taken control of my life. That was when I knew: I wanted other women to experience this kind of transformation.

After becoming a mom, I qualified as an internationally certified personal trainer, opened Fitness Maven, a ladies-only gym in Durban, and created a space where women could feel seen, supported, and empowered. Now, I’m channeling my passion into an online program to help female fitness trainers and coaches go from feeling overworked, overwhelmed, and undervalued due to the demands of balancing in-person client sessions, create and launch their own online fitness programs. This empowers them to achieve financial and time freedom and make a bigger impact without sacrificing their health or time with family, allowing them to redefine success and find freedom in their lives.

Every woman deserves to feel powerful, fulfilled, and free—without burning out along the way.

Movember Moments

Men’s Health, Summer Vibes, and the Power of a Moustache.

By Amiena Ally – Wellness Loft

Since its inception in 2003, Movember has grown into a global movement, bringing attention to the often-overlooked health challenges that men face. Every year, Movember aims to raise awareness for men’s health, focusing on key issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges such as depression and suicide. The campaign encourages men to grow mustaches, sponsor one another, and engage in conversations about health and well-being.

Prostate and testicular cancers are some of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men, but with early detection, the survival rate for both can be very high. This is why Movember emphasizes the importance of regular screenings and self-exams. Beyond physical health, the campaign also highlights mental health, which remains a leading concern worldwide. By fostering open discussions, it seeks to reduce the stigma around mental health and encourage men to seek support when needed.

Many men tend to avoid discussing their health concerns, often due to embarrassment or a belief that they need to “tough it out.” This culture of silence can lead to delayed diagnoses, worsened conditions, and unnecessary suffering. Movember’s impact goes beyond awareness—it’s a call to action. The campaign encourages men to get regular check-ups, educate themselves about health risks, and break the silence around mental health.

On a lighter note, November has also marked the start of summer vacation planning—a time to prioritize wellness and relaxation. With the longer days and warmer weather of summer, outdoor activities become more accessible. Hiking, swimming, and practicing yoga in nature are excellent ways to stay active. Sunlight boosts vitamin D levels, supporting bone health and enhancing mood.
Staying hydrated is essential during the hotter months, as dehydration can affect both energy and well-being. Summer also brings a bounty of fresh, nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, making it easier to fuel your body with healthy foods.

Prioritizing rest, exercise, and proper nutrition during the summer helps maintain balance and boosts overall wellness as the season unfolds. As we move forward from Movember, may the focus on health—both mental and physical—continue through all seasons!

Anchored in Faith

A Muslim Woman’s Journey Through Identity, Struggle, and Sacred Peace.

By Ridwana Jooma

Our human experience is lived through the identities we’re born with and the relationships we are born into. For me, being born female, Indian, Muslim, in Apartheid South Africa are the identifies that have shaped all my life experiences and relationships, especially my relationship with my Iman, my Faith.

I have been blessed with an extraordinary life, Alhumdulillah. A life filled with intense pain and ecstatic pleasure. A life filled with so many extraordinary relationships and people that have all served as my teachers. However, the one relationship that has been the most tumultuous has been my relationship with my Iman and my Allah. Being born into a Muslim family, in meant that my knowledge and experience of Islam came from an Indo/Pak tradition. And the more I learnt, the more I went to madressah and the more I questioned, the more I let go of the rope, not realizing that these were the tests that should have made me hold on to the rope even more. And, then, there were those times, in Palestine, in Iraq, in Dar as Salaam, in Mozambique, in India, in the Yucatan, in Cuba, in London, when nothing was more certain for me then Laillaha illallah (The is no other God but God).

My journey of Taqwa (Allah Consciousness) and Tawakkul (Trust and Surrender in Allah), has been one of highs and lows and many nothings in between. And in my seeking, my soul thirsty seeking, I found myself in mosques and mountains tops, in ashrams and oceans, in churches and sweat lodges, in ecstatic states of pain and ecstatic states of bliss, seeking and seeking and yearning.

I have come to know deeply that irrespective of where I am, my anchor is that I am a Muslim Woman, In her Journey, Into Her Iman. At the core of this anchoring is the nurturing and embracing of my relationship with my creator, and the practice of living this life from the sacred present. It is from this place that all of life happens, for me, and for you my sister. The every moment practice becomes embracing that sacred present moment peace, amidst the internal and external chaos that is life for all of us.

In this journey of being a Muslim woman, finding my Iman has been my deepest purpose and anchor, a source of peace amidst life’s inevitable chaos. I know that for many, the paths we walk are varied, yet we are united in the seeking, the questioning, and the strength that emerges from our own unique journeys.

What has your journey been like? What anchors you? I invite you, my sister, to share your own experiences and reflections on this path. Each story adds a layer of wisdom and resilience to our collective narrative, reminding us of the strength we carry and the faith that holds us.

If my journey resonates with you, or if you would like to connect further, please feel free to reach out at ridwana@beingawoman.co.za. Let us continue walking this sacred path, together.

Covered Magazine proudly hosted an interactive workshop, Cocktails & Crowns, where our guests had the delightful opportunity to craft their own flower crowns, sip on refreshing summer drinks, and engage in meaningful conversations.

The event took place on 17th November 2024 at the enchanting Iris Garden in Rivonia. Under the expert guidance of Fawzia Abrahams from Fosey Posey, our attendees learned the art of flower crown making, creating stunning pieces to celebrate the day.

It was truly a blooming day!

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors who joined hands with us to make this workshop a resounding success.
