Time is a fundamental aspect of existence, yet we often take it for granted. ‘How do we experience time? Where do we read time?’ These are the questions the Ishara Art Foundation’s latest exhibition, Notations on Time, curated by Sandhini Poddar and Sabih Ahmed, seeks to explore.
The exhibition featured the works of 20 contemporary artists from South Asia who explore the scope of time. The exhibition encouraged a conversation between the different generations of artists and how the past, present, and future are interconnected. The exhibition challenges the idea that progress is always good, both politically and philosophically, and suggested that time is more complex than we often think.

Through artworks loaned from the Ishara Art Foundation, the Prabhakar Collection, and private collections, the exhibition encouraged its visitors to question their perceptions of time and its place in their lives. It reminded us that time is a complex, multi-layered concept. Finally, it asks us to reflect on how we can read time differently and the use of art to better understand the world around us.
The exhibition consisted of works by Ali Kazim, Amar Kanwar, Anoli Perera, Ayesha Sultana, Aziz Hazara, Chandraguptha Thenuwara, Dayanita Singh, Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad, Haroon Mirza, Jagdish Swaminathan, Jangarh Singh Shyam, Ladhki Devi, Lala Rukh, Mariah Lookman, Sheba Chhachhi, Shezad Dawood, Soumya Sankar Bose, and Zarina.
Notations on Time was a unique and emotionally compelling exhibition that left visitors with a deeper awareness of the complexity of time and its impact on our lives.
