EDITOR’S NOTE

Peace be with you.
Welcome to 2023! I guess we’re all about the “new year, new me” concept. But for how long? This question has plagued my mind since the holiday season began. I honestly went deeper into the concept of who I am, and for me, what always comes to mind is that I am a woman! I wouldn’t say I battled with my femininity, but I feel I haven’t fully embraced her. So, this year, I decided to try my best to put her first. The key word here is “try,” because we all know what happens to New Year’s resolutions by March. So let us try together to be the best versions of ourselves by exploring intimacy! Yep, that’s the topic for this month’s issue. And no, not because Valentine’s Day is approaching, but because it is about time, we spoke about it!
I have a strong admiration for sensuality and feeling pleasure in everything that you do, so you can understand my excitement when the opportunity came about to interview Dr Shaakira Abdullah, AKA The Halal Sexpert. Man, I love my job!
A happy new year to everyone!
I sincerely hope you enjoy the read.

Malone Souliers meets Emily in the City of Lights for a très chic collaboration, inspired by the hit show’s most memorable fashion moments.
The intoxicating adventures of Emily Cooper – an ambitious American marketing executive who unexpectedly lands her dream job In Paris – have become a global sensation for good reason. Romantic intrigue, sparkling wit, and, of course, the most beautiful city on Earth, are all part of the hit show’s irresistible appeal. However, that is to neglect one key ingredient: the fashion. Emily in Paris is very much a show about style, with each key character’s personality communicated through the clothes they wear. Malone Souliers have partnered with Paramount Consumer Products to create a capsule collection that embodies the spirit and stylish joie de vivre that the MTV Entertainment Studios-produced Emily in Paris is best known for.

As with the show itself, taking centre stage in the collection is Emily, a brand-new silhouette that’s set apart by a striking statement bow on the vamp. The Emily will be available in a number of iterations, from evening-ready black and white satin to whimsical pink gingham, alluding to our protagonist’s eclectic sense of fashion. Next is the romantic and sophisticated Camille, inspired by the character of the same name: Emily’s confidante and guide to all things French. Taking Camille’s elegant personal style as a starting point, the shoe is graceful and purposeful in its shape, with a large, crystallised heart motif on the toe. And then there is the Mindy, named for Emily’s closest friend and fellow outsider to Parisian culture. Drawing on Mindy’s signature glamour and love of performing, the brand designed this shoe as an eye-catching number, replete with organza appliqué flowers across the toe.
Finally, Malone Souliers have also nodded to the show’s male characters with a couple of timeless men’s shoes. The Gab is a casual yet sophisticated sneaker, while the Alfie is a sharply modern take on the lace-up derby.

My conversation with The Halal Sexpert
By Yesmien KT
Dr. Shaakira Abdullah, popularly known as The Halal Sexpert, is a family nurse practitioner and sexologist with a Doctor of Nursing practice degree in human sexuality. She is passionate about teaching the Muslim community about sexuality from an Islamic perspective. Dr. Shaakira Abdullah will earn a Ph.D. in Human Sexuality in 2024. We are rooting for you!
You can imagine my delight when Dr. Shaakira agreed to an interview with me. As a huge fan and follower of her Instagram content, my enthusiasm got the best of me. I love my job, as I mentioned in my editor’s note! For the mere reason I get to connect with such amazing people. Being a number one groupie, I had to express my gratitude to the doctor for taking the time out of her hectic schedule to share her story with us. This one will definitely go down in my memory journal.

This read is not for the narrow-minded… We’re talking outside the box! So, tread carefully! Dr. Shaakira Abdullah, AKA “The Halalsexpert,” introduced the world to Queen V, a puppet that is a replica of the female private anatomy. The V in Queen V stands for Vulva, and she is accompanied by her sister, Kareema, The clitoris. Together with Dr. Shaakira Abdullah, they help us understand how we, as women, can receive the ultimate sensual experience with our spouses in a fun and educational way. Those are the kinds of ladies I’d hang out with! Dr. Abdullah is most certainly paving the way for a new, woke generation of sisterhood! Kudos to her for being brave enough to tackle a topic that seemed taboo to an older generation but is now quickly changing, and boy, oh boy, is it changing, and we love change, don’t we?
The question I most needed an answer to was, “How did the women in her community respond to her work as a Black Muslim woman talking openly about the sexual environment. Dr. Abdullah’s response to my question came as no surprise. “At first, it was like, what is this woman thinking?” “Is she crazy?” But overall, the response was well received, with amazing feedback about a much-needed topic that needs to be discussed.
Recently on vacation with her husband, they embarked on a spiritual holiday called Ummrah (a visit to the Holy Kaaba in Makkah), but before taking that journey, their first stop was the Maldives. Where they took the time to connect with one another. None the less, word got out that she was there, and guess what? She connected with even more sisters by hosting a workshop in the Maldives! How great is that? “From staying on a Muslim-owned resort & island to fully immersing ourselves in God’s mercy, it was such a beautiful experience to share together,” says the DR. This led the conversation to how being intimate with your spouse is a spiritual act. We chatted in depth about how being intimate is not only about the feeling of pleasure and deep connection. Dr Abdullah emphasizes the importance of intimacy as part of spirituality, and I couldn’t agree more. Connecting with ourselves first, then with our spouses, is essential for a healthy sexual life in a marriage. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable with someone close to you on an emotional, physical, and mental level is the ultimate connection.

Shootwithhaz Photography
Now, this one is for the single ladies out there; she speaks openly about what is expected of you when you marry, not just about pleasing your spouse but also about pleasing yourself. You come first (no pun intended) because you need to know your body first; it is your body, and you are in charge. If you do not understand your body, how would you be able to show your man what you like or dislike? Being aware of your sensual self is of utmost importance.
How many of us had to learn on our own how to advocate for our own pleasure? Or what is expected of a woman on her wedding night or how to keep your spouse happy and continue doing so? It’s the ongoing journey of womanhood. The Halal Sexpert opens her doors to women like us who want to know more. More about not only our sensual selves but also how we can best love our partners by loving ourselves. Yes, again, I couldn’t agree more, that it does start with “self.” The ability to teach your partner how you want to be loved is extremely important, which is a sentiment we both share.
We also touched on what age is appropriate to start having the uncomfortable “birds and bees chat” with our kids. She concurs that it should begin at a young age, stating that a child learns about his or her private parts as early as three years old. By the ages of four and six, they learn that it is their private space that no one should invade. You have to build from there, then continue to build in a language that the child understands. In a world of technology, information can easily be accessed, so it is crucial that we are open with them.
We finished with my final question to her about the infamous G-SPOT, and ladies, it does exist! Let’s have coffee to chat more about that! The DOC not only uses her expertise to share this knowledge with us on Instagram but also hosts one-on-one sessions for those in need. Her talks are always fun, exciting, and straight to the point, and she absolutely does not shy away from the fact that sex is supposed to be pleasurable for women too. Dr. Shaakira also hosts retreats, with the next one open being hosted in Morocco, so for those of you who would like to know more, follow the @thehalalsexpert account on Instagram. My bags are already packed!!!

PERPÉTUEL HAS LAUNCHED A DISTINCTIVE RANGE OF COLLECTIBLE LIMITED-EDITION TIMEPIECES CRAFTED BY WATCHMAKER LUCA SOPRANA, AND WITH THE FULL SUPPORT OF THE LATE DEREK PRATT’S FAMILY.

Perpétuel, the unique destination for horological enthusiasts across the Middle East, announces its latest collaboration with the legacy of the late Derek Pratt, one of the 20th century’s most talented watchmakers.
Entering the National College of Horology as a Smiths apprentice in 1956, Derek subsequently worked for the former head of the College, Andrew Fell. He was originally sent by the company to Switzerland, where he worked on the development of a clock to be used in black boxes for aircraft. Derek finally settled in Switzerland in 1965, successfully transferring some of his horological micro-engineering skills to the burgeoning electronics industry, however, Derek’s love of horology had not waned and following his first meeting with Peter Baumberger of Urban Jürgensen, he decided to set up his own company, producing small precision parts for other watchmakers, including George Daniels, as well as restoring mainly historical prestigious watches and clocks.

All the persons involved in this project: the Pratt family, the Pérpetuel Gallery and Atelier 7h38 (my workshop), have worked very hard to perpetuate the legacy of the man and the watchmaker. So, all I can say is that I am extremely grateful to Jenny Haller Pratt, to Derek’s daughters Caroline and Mary, and to the Pérpetuel Gallery for their support of my team during this project. Working with them all has been a great pleasure as we managed to create a very good atmosphere and I am really excited about the future of our joint project”, says Luca Soprana. Given Perpétuel’s direction and focus on independent brands, it was inevitable that the exceptional craftsmanship and fine work of Luca Soprana would attract the interest of the company.
“Perpétuel only represents the finest of the independent watch brands, and after a chance meeting with Luca, I wanted to restore the historic legacy of Derek Pratt by creating a very exclusive series to reflect his exceptional body of work. Together with Luca, we would produce a very limited series to reflect Derek Pratt’s achievements and provide our collectors around the world with extremely rare timepieces carrying the name of a watchmaker who contributed so much to the watch industry”, says Hamdan Al Hudaidi.
The partnership between Perpétuel and Luca Soprana, together with the Derek Pratt family, will feature acquirable timepieces representing a unique design exclusive to Perpétuel.

ETRO PRESENTS MEN’S FW23/24 COLLECTION
Milan, January 15th, 2023 – For Fall/Winter 2023, ETRO’s Creative Director Marco De Vincenzo debuts his first-ever men’s collection for the fashion house, which focuses on one of the founding pillars: fabrics.
The key creative focus of the collection is a jacquard velvet blanket from Marco’s childhood, whose pattern is reproduced onto broad woollen coats and jackets. Set against the backdrop of stacks of fabrics pulled from the ETRO archives, Marco’s debut men’s collection is both a homage to the Italian brand’s roots and a way to connect with his past. Pieces in the new collection are assembled to stimulate sight and touch, with 3D crochet fruit growing on jumpers, melton patches defining jacket collars, and psychedelic swirls liquefying on fuzzy pullovers. Patterned linings are hidden from view and further augment the importance of motifs and textures, with tartan – an early ETRO success – in a leading role.

ETRO’s FW23/24 Collection is a true collaboration where familiarity and domesticity are apparent, and the ETRO house and Marco overlap and mingle in their creativity.

Words and Pictures by Sabah a Malik
In a famous African proverb, we learn that it takes a village to raise a child- in post covid times how true is this really? After cascading through the list of potential topics to consider, I’m going to spotlight marriage. Marriage, particularly Muslim marriage, is big business, from makeup, venue, photography, floristry, stage decoration, and, of course, the dress, to hiring that all-important Bentley as the golden chariot. Forget royalty; everyone’s a blue blood. More importantly, who doesn’t love a good wedding? These days, we are all the more appreciative of leaving behind the quota-filled COVID weddings where only 30 people could attend, unless you’re an introvert, in which case you had a merciful window of opportunity. Trends sweeping the globe allow for a plethora of cultural fusions that make weddings so much more interesting.
Who has been to a wedding in a house draped with lights, shining ever so brightly as beacons of happiness? Or perhaps you have walked into a wedding where the cake is too good to eat—a work of art, if you will. Guilty! You may have even graced a philanthropic wedding, where the extra food goes to a local soup kitchen so those less fortunate can enjoy the wedding breakfast too. You get the idea.

Pull back all the layers, and at the heart are two individuals who have chosen to spend the rest of their lives together, in matrimonial bliss. Ok, perhaps that last part is the optimist in me. But seriously, how did the happy couple get there? Marriage apps are frequently used to play cupid these days. That assisted marriage story from yesteryear could be becoming the stuff of legend. Virtually, we are a global village of sorts, and yet, ironically, loneliness is up from previous years. Mental health and well-being have recently, and post-pandemic declined as we learn more about human social psychology. Phrases like “toxic masculinity,” “nepo” babies, “virtue signalling,” and “being woke” have been coined. In an increasingly judgemental, superficially fleeting world, how has the community dwindled?

It’s hard to pinpoint any one reason, but regardless, it is increasingly difficult for Muslims to find suitable life partners. Finding your spouse online has its own challenges and triumphs. For starters, many marriage apps do not vet those who sign up. It can feel like dancing in jelly at this masquerade ball, where the identities of those in attendance are unknown. If you have successfully navigated those hoops and have made a connection with someone who has potential, a new realm of superpower is needed to know if you’re being ghosted or if it’s too soon to text back. Muslim “agony aunties” increasingly narrate these problems with rhetoric that is not dissimilar to those we used to read in gossip columns in our favourite teen magazine. Far, far removed from any nuggets of wisdom from the faith, no real resolutions offered, and a hoard of disillusioned singles in the wake. Coffee for one? It’s beginning to sound like a “you” problem.
Rather sadly, many local community groups have surrendered their powers, simply stating that they do not get involved with facilitating marriage, or alternatively, they did at one stage, but someone’s aggrieved uncle has filed a lawsuit, and in the current cost of living crisis, money is best spent on electricity, not on attorneys. So we ask ourselves, “What would the prophet Muhammad ﷺ do?” In the enlightening book I’m currently reading about the Prophet ﷺ, I’ve been encouraged by how the Prophet advocated for his people’s spiritual well-being when delivering Dawah. He ﷺ held a genuine care for the spiritual advancement of all people, embodying mercy and kindness.
Personal agendas were not at the forefront of his mind. Such selflessness is a thing of beauty and is oftentimes overlooked. In the hustle and bustle of this world, where competitive survival is the order of the day, sincere care for the community should be sought wherever possible. In Islam, it is stated numerous times that what you want for yourself, you want for your fellow Muslim. What does this look like when it comes to marriage? The Prophet ﷺ himself said in Bukhari, “A believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts support each other.” The Prophet ﷺ then clasped his hands with the fingers interlaced while saying that. Community networks are a huge positive.
Vetting individuals is something that we do in recruitment all the time, and yet this is something made harder by online matchmaking? App providers and online agencies should take more responsibility for this. Will it raise the expectations of acceptable online behaviour and general etiquette? Resoundingly yes.
The nonchalant, carefree attitude held by some would be kept in check, and many more unnecessary conversations would be avoided. What’s more, the Prophet ﷺ said, “God does not look at your bodies, appearance, or wealth.” Rather, He looks at your hearts and deeds’. Interestingly it’s the unseen that has the most prevalence with God. Not, any of the material or superficial attributes that we as a society sometimes place on a pedestal. Digging deeper into the Sunnah, we find the importance of looking out for each other. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘The believers, in their mutual kindness, compassion, and sympathy, are just like one body.” “When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever.” Life is an undulating path of celebrations and challenges, not the least of which is finding a life partner; so it goes without saying that assisting others along the way is a sure-fire way to God. So let’s spread a little love, look up into the sky, and ask the question, “How can I help?” a bit more. Undoubtedly, all things lie in the hands of Allah. Certainly, it’s not all doom and gloom. Allah says, “Be, and it is.”

New Year, New You Goals? Four Fitness Ideas to Keep This Year’s Resolution in Check
Get proactive and keep your resolution with these tips for a fitness-centric 2023.
When we’re tired, sluggish, it’s raining outside or the working day has been harder than usual, we are all very good at making excuses that eventually become traps that sabotage our training. This year, however, we want 2023 to be all about fitness and wellness from start to finish.
Here’s to 365 days in our best shape ever! How? At New Year, let’s give ourselves a list of resolutions to stick on the fridge or to pin up somewhere visible in the house, with the solemn promise to tone or strengthen our muscles and burn fat or at the very least boost our metabolism or comply to fitness objectives you set for yourself.
If you’re feeling guilty, the good news is that losing your mojo is very common – you’re not alone. In January, many people join a gym or buy a package of online lessons, but then aren’t able to stick to their resolutions, giving a range of extenuating circumstances, from the legitimate to the less convincing. Among the most valid reasons, which are an indication that your body really needs to rest, are when you’re ill, you’ve hurt yourself, you’re exhausted, or you have sore muscles. Indeed, recovery is essential to getting the best results. If you’re ill, it’s essential that your body fights the germs and uses all its energy for a good recovery. If you’re simply tired and perhaps lacking focus, a stop allows you to get your strength back, otherwise your training won’t be productive, and you’ll risk injuring yourself.

As is true for most goals, it takes a lot of perseverance and determination to start or redefine one’s workout path; however, with these four tips, establishing an effective workout program for a healthy 2023 will be super easy.
1. ONE STEP AT A TIME, WITHOUT OVERDOING IT
Consistency and gradualness are the key to building an effective new workout habit. By training with Technogym App, you can choose your workout session from a wide variety of content designed for every fitness level. Moreover, the Technogym Coach will design a personalised workout program specific for you, based on your lifestyle, personal needs and passions.
2. CODE WORD: VARIETY
After the first few weeks of sticking to the new training program with enthusiasm, a loss of interest may take over. The secret to avoiding it? Variety! With Technogym Bench, you can perform an endless number of exercises for total body workouts that always vary. The tools contained inside, and the minimal footprint make it the perfect solution for functional training at home.
3. SPORTS IN THE COLDER MONTHS? NO FEAR!
Often, as the colder months arrive, the desire to exercise outdoors diminishes. This, however, should not be a deterrent to stop moving; with the right equipment, it will be possible to maintain good fitness habits within the walls of your home. Technogym Ride, for example, is designed to simulate an outdoor cycling experience and replicate real-world routes and inclines, all available indoors.
4. TRAINING WITHOUT GIVING UP STYLE
Who said fitness and elegance can’t go hand in hand? All you need to add a touch of style to your workouts is Technogym Personal Line. Its products, created by the world-acclaimed designer Antonio Citterio, are elegantly designed not only as workout equipment, but also as true works of art to be placed in the most beautiful spaces of your home.

Intimacy: to bare or not to bare?
By Sayerah Bhamjee Patel
Should I be having a conversation with my younger, teen self on the topic of intimacy, I would probably be extremely shy, as my association with the concept of intimacy then was largely based on my belief that it had more, if not everything, to do with sex. It was the physical expression of my love or desire for an individual.

Istockphoto.com
How far was I willing to go…? As I grew older and entered life as an early adolescent, late teen, or “young adult,” i.e., in my twenties, my perspectives began to shift. Intimacy gradually became more about the relationship I shared with you, which was not limited to a love interest. Relationships began to take on a new meaning. Friends and family and their roles in my life began to change. Soon I got married, and the focal point of intimacy was centred on the relationship I shared with my spouse.
Having just entered my 26th year of marriage, I have come to learn that intimacy in a relationship between a husband and wife is an integral part of the relationship, allowing for the relationship to be sustained, to grow, and to be nurtured. It allows the couple to advance in their relationship despite the differences and challenges that will undoubtedly arise. Intimacy in marriage is all to do with mind, body, and soul—and the time you give each other.
When a husband and wife commit to each other, in the beginning it’s all about dreams and desires, and as time progresses, it slowly, unwittingly, and quite by surprise, becomes more about sharing and inclusion. How much of yourself are you prepared to fearlessly share with your spouse? The expression of your sharing plays itself out in the words you speak, the physical embraces you share, both lustful and passionate, as well as the simple hug or peck on the cheek, and the trust you build.
Intimacy is more about how much a part of each other’s lives you become. The time spent revealing who you are with your vulnerabilities, strengths, and weaknesses being intimate takes courage because it is about expressing yourself. Many of us shy away from this because we fear judgment and rejection. When we give ourselves a chance and it does not go well, we often become stuck in the outcome and refrain from trying again. This widens the gap, and intimacy begins to dwindle.

Istockphoto.com
Sharing yourself with your partner builds intimacy. Building and maintaining trust with your partner builds intimacy. These are reciprocal practices through which both trust and intimacy grow and are maintained. One cannot exist without the other. Having an intimate relationship with your partner makes you feel whole. This can only be attained by regularly engaging with each other. Take time and making time for each other is key. What you do and how often you do it will stimulate intimacy. It will keep the lines of communication open. Having said so, we should strive to take time to play together, pray together, and live together.
Let’s talk play… The most intimate form of play is undoubtedly the sexual relationship we share with our partner. This relationship binds us to each other in a very sacred way. It is the closest we are to each other. As much as I would like to romanticize it, the reality is that many of us do struggle in this department, and many of us don’t. Either way, like every marriage and relationship, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The advice would be to keep it regular, keep it spicy, keep it fun, and be prepared to bare yourself. Sharing is really caring in this realm of life.
Pray together… The humbled voice and the grateful heart bring you closer to realizing who you are and what you have. After all, intimacy equals closeness.
Live together… Share the day. The hours, the tasks, the mundane, the happy, the sad, the crises, especially the crises, and the celebrations Eat together; be a team.
Intimacy between husband and wife is not a one-man sport. Be a team. Intimacy is key for any relationship to flourish. It’s the bonds we share and the closeness we have. It will vary from person to person, but we work on developing it all the time.
The one relationship we tend to forget and take for granted the most, though, is the relationship with ourselves. How close are we to ourselves? How well do you know who you are? Understanding the self, engaging with the self, and nurturing the self are the first steps to intimacy. We take this so much for granted because we seek ourselves in others. Get to know yourself too. We spend far too little time understanding our values and value system, and this, I believe, blurs the lines of intimacy with ourselves and others. Understand your value. Spend time with yourself too and develop a sense of personal worth; this will allow you to express yourself confidently and from a place of dignity.
Knowing who you are allows you to choose with confidence what you share and with whom you share it. The comfort and ease of expression will grow. Connecting with yourself allows you to connect with others. It now becomes something of value, shared with someone of value. And the value of who I choose to be intimate with is a priceless gift I give myself.

Living into your purpose (“ikigai”)
By Khadija Mia
What if it works? What if it doesn’t? Am I living a life of purpose?
Not everything you initiate may be an overnight success. Let’s face it: sometimes you need to stumble, fall, fail, learn, make a ton of mistakes, hustle hard, and get rejected in order to create a business, career, relationship, or life for yourself. However, what if you keep doing the same thing repeatedly and get the same result? Are you directing your energy meaningfully and intentionally? And are you following your passion and purpose and actually finding joy in what you do? What if this turns into a career, business, or life you want, and you can make money or earn a living from your calling?
So, the formula is simple for me… It’s not living my purpose, but rather “living into my purpose”… that gives me the most joy… and motivates me to get out of bed in the morning – this is known as my “ikigai.” Ikigai is a Japanese concept that means your “reason for being.” “Iki” in Japanese means “life,” and “gai” describes value or worth. Your ikigai is your life purpose or your bliss. It is, as I’ve mentioned, what brings you joy and inspires you to get out of bed every day. In Japan, ikigai is a slow process and often has nothing to do with work or income.
“According to Dan Buettner, an expert on Blue Zones, the areas of the world where people live longest, the concept of ikigai pervades the life of these islanders. Combined with a particular diet and support network of friends or “moai”, ikigai is helping people live longer on Okinawa as it gives them purpose, he says, who provides a karate master, fisherman and great-great-great-grandmother, all of whom are more than 100 years old, as examples.” – World economic forum.
The Westernized version of Ikigai says you have found your dream career when your career includes these four qualities: What you love; what you are good at; what you can be paid for; what the world needs.
This ikigai diagram helps to visualize this concept by showing these four main overlapping qualities:

The centre point on the Venn diagram where all four circles overlap is your ikigai. Garcia maintains that the Venn diagram provided in his book and created by American entrepreneur Marc Winn to illustrate the concept of ikigai (with the four categories of “what you love,” “what the world needs,” “what you can be paid for,” and “what you are good at”) can help you find your ikigai if used as a basis to sort out your thoughts. “For example, if you love to cook and are good at it, “cooking” could fulfil the categories of “what the world needs” and “what you can be paid for.”
Your aim could be a modest one, such as catering a friend’s party or bringing smiles to the faces of those who have enjoyed your food. “Though it may be difficult to fulfil all four categories, by keeping them in mind, you can make your ikigai even more fulfilling.”
So how does one find the sweet spot in their ikigai? One needs to dig deep down inside to reflect, introspect, and ask oneself whether their current work, vision, and aspirations around their life purpose fulfil their expectations. Following that, once you have a deeper meaning and more clarity, you must define small goals you can pursue, explore options you can pursue (even if they are part-time), plan your activities, and hold yourself accountable. It is also important to engage with mentors, networks, and professionals that can assist you. Furthermore, before embarking on a larger scale, you should test your ideas by launching specific projects or initiatives. The process is easier said than done. One of the biggest obstacles may be the negative voices or limiting beliefs that may hold you back.

Our beliefs drive our actions and behaviours, and our actions and behaviours drive our destiny. Many people have a limiting belief about money… e.g., “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Haven’t we all heard this before?
Beliefs are created by our upbringing and cultural stereotypes. Our beliefs drive our actions and behaviours, and our actions and behaviours drive our destiny. To eradicate these limiting beliefs, start with, “What is my belief that comes up often and stands in my way of fulfilling my dream?” Investigate from a point of curiosity and consciously try to understand where it originates.
Work through any negative triggers or even trauma associated with this and start the process of reframing your thoughts so that you can create a change in mind-set. Let us return to the negative belief and thought about money… Reframe the thought and tell yourself instead. E.g., “There is always more from where that comes from.” By speaking this way, you will act and start behaving in a way that will realign you towards your purpose. You will be able to redirect your actions more intentionally around money. By aligning your actions with your purpose, you can change your reality, and guess what? This changes your beliefs too. You will be surprised at how this will fulfil your purpose in everything you do. Just knowing what your ikigai is not enough—people need to put their purpose into action. Researchers stress that ikigai can change with age. For anyone whose work is their reason for living, this will come as a relief as they approach retirement and begin the search for a new ikigai. Have you found your “ikigai”? Start by taking a journey from within.

FARHA: A Movie Review
By Sumaya Mamdoo
Research by Zaytoon Akhalwaya Abed
Farah is a coming-of-age film set against the backdrop of the Palestinian Nakba or catastrophe. It is directed and written by Jordanian filmmaker, Darin J. Sallam. It stars 18-year-old Karem Taher in the titular role of Farha. The movie, which is based on true events, follows Farha’s days hiding in her pantry during the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, and the filmmaking is so well done that for 92 minutes the viewer can feel as claustrophobic as she does.
Farha lives in her village and plays amongst her schoolmates with the typical problems a young schoolgirl in Palestine might face. She spends her days going to Islamic classes, playing, picking fruit, and reading. The topic of boys and finding a possible suitor is also part of her daily life as a 14-year-old in 1948. However, Farha does not want to walk the expected path in life. She yearns to further her education in the city with the approval of her father and open a school for girls in her village. Her rebelliousness makes her a lovable character but is also what leads to her downfall.

Farha official poster. Twitter.
Things take a turn for the worst with the impending first Palestinian War and the creation of the state of Israel. She cannot bring herself to abandon her father, but he feels as mayor of the village that he must fight with his people and for them. Abu Farha (Farha’s father) locks her in their pantry room with one promise: “I will come back, my child.”
We watch Farha stay in the locked pantry for days with only a little peephole that gives her a limited view of her house while she waits for her father. The light and shadows change to indicate the passage of time. In this sense, the movie is fast paced with the first sign of violence taking place a little over 10 minutes in, although for good reason. It is a somewhat uncomfortable watch because it is based on true events. The movie would not work if it dragged on for two hours. The movie knows that it must present a point and do it quickly for the most impact and it does a great job at making the point. “This is the Nakba, this is what happened 74 years ago, and this is how it affected and continues to affect Palestinian people to this day. This is one story of many.”
Although centred on a war there are not many violent scenes with only two in full (the second one will require tissues on hand). The sounds of war are constantly heard which adds not only to Farah’s but also to the viewer’s anxiety. The sound is highly appreciated as the tanks, guns, and other weaponry are not made excessively loud. They may even be dialled down to not trigger the audience who this story is based upon. The filmmaking is stunning and surprising considering most of it is taking place in Farha’s pantry. There is a sweet foreshadowing scene when Farha asks what her father is doing, and he is filling in the gaps of his house with more rocks to make it stronger. The relationship between Farha and her father is quite sweet with him balancing the line between stern and loving parent.
A specific scene is when Farha is looking through a crack in her door and most of the shot is focused on her one eye and the eye of the person on the other side of the door but so much emotion, specifically, terror is seen through the shot. Taher has earned her laurel as a Toronto International Film Festival rising star. At 18 years old she handles the subject matter beautifully.

Another highly enjoyable aspect is the costume design. Palestinian garb and embroidery are showcased beautifully, and it is appreciated because it is somewhat of a lost skill. If Farha only has the clothes off her back to flee with during the Nakba she will always have more than a handful of Palestinian pounds. This is indicated by the gold coins sewn along the front of her smadeh. A smadeh is a Palestinian headdress that indicates a girl’s bridal wealth by sewing some of her bridal money onto the cap. This is indicated by the gold coins sewn along the front of her smadeh. A smadeh is a Palestinian headdress that indicates a girl’s bridal wealth by sewing some of her bridal money onto the cap.
Farha perfectly encapsulates the beginning of the Palestinian struggle that is prevalent today, but she also represents the millions of hopes and dreams that had to be squandered in the name of survival. In a matter of days, she had big dreams and was on the way to fulfilling them and now those dreams are no longer viable. Farha’s dreams and the future of Palestine are squandered.
It is a poignant watch.
This movie, above all else, is important for the Palestinian struggle. Farha is available to stream on an international platform, it has been showcased at two international film festivals, and is the Jordanian pick for the 2023 Oscars. The Palestinian struggle which may not have much traction in the west is now being shown. Important stories about the impact of the creation of Israel are available for more people to see.
There has been a backlash on the Israeli front with some saying it is an attempt to compare the Nakba to the Holocaust. However, the entire concept of this movie will remind the viewer of a similar, much more famous story of a girl who was also in hiding, Anne Frank. Anne Frank in her annex and Farha in her pantry probably relate to each other just a little.
Women were at the forefront of bringing Farha’s story to life with Rachelle Aoun serving as cinematographer, Karam Taher as Farha and Sallam as director and it is no wonder why this movie deserves all the praise. The story coupled with great visuals makes this a compelling and touching film. Your heart will be moved. Farha is available to stream on Netflix and deserves an 8/10 rating.
