Peace be with you.

Peace be with you,

For me, becoming a woman in business was by default. What started off as hobby has grown into a publication that I could never have thought possible. Diving into the deep end as a female entrepreneur has become part of my daily life now. Being in and out of meetings and discussions as well as preps and plans have become a daily routine for me. I won’t lie, I enjoy every moment of it when I am in it…. But there are also the days when my motivation is on the low and I don’t want to do any of that…

This month’s issue is dedicated to the businesswoman. Showing up and doing what you got to do, regardless of how you feel. I am awe of our cover feature, Nasreen Chamda as she shares with us her journey of entrepreneurship, we have a look at some amazing fashion with Missoni, find out if Sam ended it all in part two of our mental health article and share more dynamic stories of business, life and fashion.

So, pull up a chair, take a moment and enjoy the read.

Carolina Herrera Launches Good Girl Midnight and Announces Lebanese Actress Nadine Nassib Njeim as the Star of its Campaign.

Carolina Herrera is proud to announce the arrival of Good Girl Midnight, the new limited edition in the celebrated Good Girl range of fragrances, exclusively launched in the Middle East.

To bring this deeply intense and textured Eau de Parfum to life, Carolina Herrera has chosen Nadine Nassib Njeim to incarnate the essence of Good Girl fragrances for the region and celebrate the confidence of Middle Eastern women.

Fronting the new campaign with the fearless confidence and contrasting aspects of femininity that are so intrinsic to the Good Girl universe, Nadine was photographed in Beirut drenched in a gold sequin dress specially designed by Wes Gordon, creative director of Carolina Herrera New York. It is a campaign that was created by Beirut-based production company, Plastik Studios to celebrate the magical mystery of the night and explore the multifaceted personality of the Good Girl woman, as represented by the famously high heel of the legendary stiletto-shaped bottle. Interpreted for Good Girl Midnight in an intense black lacquer as deep as the darkest of nights, the shoe’s toe is dipped in a luxurious cascade of illuminating gold dust, and housed in a gold box embossed with a geometric motif reminiscent of twinkling stars.

Good Girl Midnight re-interprets the iconic jasmine signature of its predecessor with a powerfully feminine heart of tuberose and orange blossom. A completely new take on the duality that’s integral to every fragrance in the Good Girl collection, the floral core of the fragrance is blended in its base notes with traditionally noble sandalwood, mysterious and narcotic patchouli, as well as the rich warmth of vanilla and its more complex and fascinating relative, the tonka bean. Good Girl Midnight speaks to modern women with its complex and multifaceted femininity. Assuredly sensual, unexpectedly layered and contrasted, it boldly states what every Good Girl knows: when night falls, the true magic happens.

THE BRAVE
HEART

A FEMALE ENTREPRENUERSHIP SPECIAL

by Sabah A.Malik

Marvel at the incredible force that is female. I look at women entrepreneurship as a welcome concept which has gathered serious momentum in recent years. Rewind back to the 6th Century CE and a businesswoman by the name of Khadija bint Khuwaylid RA, was known as an incredibly successful merchantess. She was of course the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (S) and oftentimes referred to as the first follower of Islam. The article considers the tenacity of the role, including sound bites from female entrepreneurs in London, their successes and their words of wisdom. Not to be missed if you are looking to break away from the mundane and embrace your own autonomy.

FROM MONDAY TO FRIDAY THE FUTURE IS FEMALE

This month, as part of Covered Magazine’s celebration of Female Entrepreneurs, I embarked upon an exciting week talking to bright and spirited women who have entered the exciting world of being a ‘Boss Lady’. I hear about their individual, interesting pathways to ‘bossing’ it. The ladies talk candidly about the challenges they have faced, all the while sharing the strength of character that has supported them in overcoming these challenges. I am honoured to share their voices and their brave hearts.

Motivation leaves you but consistency stays. My personal trainer enjoys saying this and she is not wrong. Her name is Khadijah, and she started her fitness business about 5 years ago. Her story is not unlike many other young female entrepreneurs globally, who have taken back control of their careers. No longer willing to work for ‘the company’ Khadijah was tired of the constraints of the typical ‘9 to 5’ or as she says, ‘7 to 7’. She is pensive when reflecting on her journey.

Originally a high school Vice Principal in the bustling inner city of London, Khadijah was an educator with a background in physical education.

‘The young people I worked with always showed resilience despite their background of living in challenging social economic environments. That was the bit I enjoyed but sadly the politics, changing goal posts and constant mental health pressures were difficult to navigate through on a daily basis’ These are the negative realities that educators know only too well and with an undeclared expectation for ‘presentism’ in the workplace and rising demands to work into the evening and weekends, the capacity for being emotionally available for life outside of work is slim. ‘I needed to do something that made me excited to start the day. Something where I could create a positive vibe and an ethos that supported growth. I had spent the last few years in leadership and due to factors outside of my control felt dreary both mentally and physically.

My background was in fitness so that’s what I went back to.’ Khadijah began struggling with her weight, where stress had taken its toll. She began to combat this through small steps in changing eating habits and exercise.

Fitness was a key inspiration for her. As her journey continued, family and friends joined her along the way. She got to making enquiries into acquiring a space where women, including those who needed privacy for religious reasons, could get fit. ‘I wanted a chilled out place that would strike a friendly vibe, smart and safe but one where it sent a strong message about female empowerment. I drew a lot from Scandinavian inspiration including the concept of ‘Hygge’. Khadijah has clearly thought about this. She employed all natural materials and clean tones of monochrome to create an inviting yet calming space. ‘I wanted a boutique gym that didn’t smack of pretension, so I eventually settled on a loft space in an old wharf building originally used for holding teas from China!’

Aesthetically, it is an inviting loft, and any visitor can appreciate the time taken in creating a female friendly environment that is light yet private. Tea and coffees are available here in the consultation area, with appointment only slots to ensure only those serious about fitness are welcome. Khadijah talks with the love of a mother in creating her gym. ‘I want all my clients to feel that they have my dedicated support. No hurry. No rush. No drama.’ Researchers from the University of Salamanca have spoken about how female entrepreneurs behave differently to their male counterparts in developing their businesses. It is more like nurturing a child. Women demonstrate the sheer bravery and positivity to success through strategic management of their aims. I leave Khadijah’s gym feeling inspired and happy. Here was someone who had overcome a difficult time with grace and resilience. I thought about the lessons for me and how I could be inspired to make some changes to my own life that needed addressing. I couldn’t wait for the rest of the week.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SABAH A. MALIK
FRONTPAGE & P.5 PHOTOS: CANVA

On Wednesday I was looking forward to speaking with my health coach, Hind. I am especially interested in gaining insight from someone who is a survivor of workplace bullying. Hind is a vivacious and bubbly personality, and she exudes a real people’s person vibe. She puts this down to her upbringing in a lively family with both Irish and Algerian heritage. Checking in with everyone is really important for Hind and growing up doing this, it is of no surprise that she eventually went to work in social Heare. Originally a fashion buyer, things changed for Hind when she made a decision to wear the Hijab. ‘I loved my job! ‘She oozes with delight. ‘No one day was the same and the people I would meet really spurred me on every day! I was inspired.

At first, I only wore my hijab (head scarf) on Fridays (jummah)’ she reflects, ‘I didn’t notice too much of a difference with the way I was treated in the beginning but then when the opportunity came for a promotion, I immediately became aware of micro aggressions toward me.’ Hind recalls that these would be subtle things that you couldn’t really put a finger on but it ‘just felt different’ When she applied for a promotion with better pay, travel perks and a few other trimmings AND she was not successful, Hind decided it was time for change. Fast forward ten years and she is a successful hijamist, acupuncturist and life coach. Her business model is ultra-flexible, fitting this round her busy schedule of being a mum to two active and equally demanding twin boys, Yunus and Yusha.

‘Sometimes I have to pinch myself ‘she muses. ‘I can hardly believe that I am doing something I love, and I have the ability to practice my faith without fear of discrimination. I have clients in swanky Georgian conversions in Belgravia and equally clients who are hardworking mums like me! My philosophy is simple, ‘treat others as you wish to be treated’.’ Hind’s story is truly remarkable. She left her high flying job in the city and went back to school. She trained in acupuncture and Hajima  with additional skills in coaching. Being brave enough to take the plunge when there is rent to pay is no mean feat. By Allah’s grace, Hind’s parents and husband have been a bedrock to her dreams. She had savings to draw upon so that she was not completely starting from scratch and she is so grateful that she did not have to go to the bank to ask for a loan. ‘The world changed in 2020 and when the country went into lockdown, I was able to focus on family and realigning priorities.’ Everyone can concur.
Being an entrepreneur means that you are adaptable and your business has some degree of fluidity to account for changing perspectives and events.
During the various national lockdowns in the UK, Hind was able to focus on developing the mental health and life coaching side of her business, which she moved online. Even now, Hind works with long distance clients online from as far afield as Melbourne and Doha.’ Sustainability is key for growth and ultimately “Allah is the best of planners’’ Hind contemplates before setting off to her next appointment.

I love Fridays and what’s not to love when my last visit to a female entrepreneur involves Cake! I am thrilled to visit Natascha who decided that after a 15 years in marketing and local politics full time, she wanted to trade in the number crunching for the natural sourdough starter and give a more hands-on sector a go. The thing I love about visits to Natascha is not just that she sells cakes but she is a modern baker so she is just as comfortable making a scrumptious red velvet cake as she is making Gulab Jamum cheesecake. Nothing is impossible and the wackier the idea the more keen she is to give it a go! I am equally happy to be a taste tester! It’s a hard life, I know.

When I arrive, Natascha is in her studio as she calls it and hard at work. She still works part time and does the baking on the other days.
In a converted outhouse in the bottom of her expansive garden, Natascha has the ingredients for everything that she needs-social media, space and recommendations.

Mainly using Instagram and Facebook to generate clients, the business grew out of the ‘love and support of family and friends.’ She relies heavily on word of mouth which is very natural for a business that is linked to food. It’s also really flexible and I have often heard Natascha talk of being elbow deep in flour at midnight! The thing about starting your own business as a woman is juggling the many other responsibilities one has- whether that be children, looking after elderly parents or just wanting to practice self-care. ‘It is a little unpredictable and planning is key’ Natasha says waving a spatula dipped in buttercream, ‘but that is what is so wonderful about baking-every cake is an artisanal piece, and still my aim is to make it super tasty and special for my clients’. She is not wrong. Natashca has made the most beautiful cake to help me celebrate my aunt’s birthday. Not only is it a testament to her company ethos but also a metaphor for the uniqueness associated with every small female owned business. When I present the cake later at my aunt’s birthday, everyone has a smile on their face.

Speaking to inspirational women this week, being brave enough to take the plunge and start their own business, I have come to realise a few things. Being able to bounce back from trauma is more common than I ever imagined but the grit shown by these women is second to none. There is no victim culture, instead a real belief that no two days are the same. No one entrepreneur is completely the same and very often there is no premeditated strategy involved in beginning this adventure. Things just fall into place according to a higher plan.

Women who have had successful careers in other sectors have the financial grounding to springboard into a new venture without reliance on banks and other sources of income. We relish the opportunity to be independent away from the financial shackles of a patriarchal society.

Women love the flexibility of working for themselves, especially if they have other priorities to attend to without conflict or pressures on their mental health. Each of the women I have met this week spoke of low days and believing beyond anything that ‘Verily after difficulty comes ease’ (Quran 94:5). Their biggest rival was their own self-belief and their biggest support, outside of family and friends, was their faith. Holding steadfast has really supported their journeys and being patient was something that they all spoke of. Certainly, it is a tall order in the fast-paced world we live in, but the bravery displayed by these women shows real determination to succeed. I am reminded by an emotional and apt verse from the Quran (12:87) talking of the Prophet Yusuf (A.S)’s disappearance and I honestly cannot think of a better way to finish my week. “O my sons! Go and search ˹diligently˺ for Joseph and his brother. And do not lose hope in the mercy of Allah, for no one loses hope in Allah’s mercy except those with no faith.”

Can Islam save the toxic millennial man?

By Sumaya Mamdoo

We live in an age where anyone can have a platform to say anything. While this is a good thing, sometimes we see someone with highly controversial opinions gain a huge following and almost in an instant that person is able to reach not thousands but millions of people.
Enter Andrew Tate, a former professional kickboxer turned internet personality and most recently, revert to Islam.

Andrew Tate is performing namaaz

Tate is thirty-five years old and comes from a mixed race and multicultural household with an African American father. He was born in Washington D.C and raised in England. Tate was a professional kickboxer from 2005-2013 where he had a mildly successful career with eighteen knockout wins and in 2013, ranked second best light-heavyweight kickboxer in the world. He has retired from combat sports (but is teasing a comeback fight with another problematic YouTuber, Jake Paul).
He had a brief stint on a reality TV show, Big Brother, but was swiftly removed after a video of him beating a woman with a belt was discovered on his Twitter. Both him and the woman have said that the act was consensual, but this has not stopped him from preaching his blatant misogynistic opinions onto the internet.

Before being banned from most platforms such as TikTok, Twitter and Instagram, Tate had used his platform to share his views on women. In one of his tweets, he had said that women belong in the home and should not be allowed to drive. Although a country does not truly represent Islam, the scary thing is women were not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia until 2018. Is Islam somehow supporting his views or will he see the religion for what it truly is and can the beauty of it change someone who seems to be filled with hatred? Let us look further.
During the #MeToo movement Tate had tweeted that women should take some of the responsibility for being raped. The #MeToo movement was such a pivotal point for women in history and it highlighted the plight of not only women in the entertainment industry but women everywhere who had been sexually assaulted. In this moment he chooses to victim blame. Surah Nur (The Light) highlights rules regarding sex in Islam and it is here where we come to know the mercifulness of Allah in the context of rape. “And if someone compel them, then indeed, Allah is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful” [24:33].

Andrew Tate portrait

Islam is a loving religion; Islam is a peaceful religion, but Islam is also a feminist religion.

Khadija (RA), one of Islam’s core female role models can be argued to be one of the first “girl bosses” of her time. She was a businesswoman and a good businesswoman at that. She had a respected reputation even before becoming the wife of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Aisha (May God be pleased with her.) was a scholar who transcribed many hadiths and spoke publicly about Islam. She was especially important in the early years of Islam and without her who knows if Islam would have spread as quickly as it did. Nusaybah bint Kaab (May God be pleased with her) was a warrior who fought in famous battles such as the Battle of Uhud and was so good that she was tasked with protecting Muhammad (Peace be upon him) on the battlefield. There is a reason that Muslim women do not have to take our husbands name when we marry. We can keep our identity separate from that of our husband’s. There is a reason that when asked who we love after Allah and the Prophet (Peace be upon him), it is our mothers three times and then our fathers. These women and practices show us that women are not only equal but that women should be highly esteemed within Islamic society.

The thing about being an internet personality is just that right? It stays on the internet. For all we know Tate is just being controversial on the internet for views. It has certainly worked as his TikTok videos have been viewed 11.6 billion times and in July of this year he was the most googled person. Tate could have been a good Muslim all this time and we could not have known because he is just on a screen, right? Unfortunately, no. In the late 2010’s and up until before the pandemic he mingled with far-right government officials such as Nigel Farage who is famously Islamophobic. Tate even went as far as to say that him and his family endorse Donald Trump after meeting Donald Trump Jr. On a podcast Tate described famous anti-Islam activist, Tommy Robinson as a “solid guy” with a “good heart” and stated that they were friends. To clarify, Robinson calls Islam a disease. To come back to Islam is one thing, but to fully follow the religion and its practices of non-violence and tolerance is another. How can he go from one extreme to the other? There is also the matter of abuse allegations against him. He has never been formally charged with anything, but multiple women have come forward with claims. Couple that with some of his videos in which he describes how he would beat a hypothetical woman and his comments about rape, and it is hard not to view him as an abuser.

The unfortunate truth is that not even Islam can stop an abuser from being an abuser although it should. What can stop hate is love for Islam. Tate has said that he reverted because he sees Islam as the last true religion and other religions do not follow their book as closely. He also stated that Islam is not an easy religion to mock because we have doctrines and laws in place, but he has spent his whole life being the opposite of what a Muslim man should be. He has reverted but will he be able to learn a “new normal” for himself? Can he love Aisha (May God be pleased with her) and Khadija (May God be pleased with her) despite hardly knowing them? To admire the discipline of Islam is one thing but to love Islam itself is a different thing.

There is the other issue of the audience, will they see this behaviour and think this is how Muslim men are supposed to act and that misogyny is “Islamic”? The answer to that is obviously no and unfortunately the media may take that stance. It is ultimately up to Tate to show them how to follow the Quran and relay the word of Allah that is not misogynistic. It will be his Jihad (Spiritual struggle), his newfound Islamic self-versus his old self. Only the Almighty may guide him, and for HE knows best.

Turning Oil into Ice Cream

By yesmien Khota Touffie

Yes, that’s precisely what Nasreen Chamda, shared with us in our audio interview, check out the link below.
Nasreen has evolved into a dynamic business woman, not only is she the host of two food shows on Dstv but she owns her sleepwear brand called, Elara and, yes there is an AND! She runs a filling station in one of the busiest streets in Johannesburg, South Africa. How she does it all with fabulous ease is a read way.

Being in the public eye, how do manage your personal life? Is there a balance between work and home?
It can be challenging at times. Month end can be particularly taxing, but we work through it. As a psychologist, I utilise my skills to ensure that I have a healthy work life balance.

Do you have a good family support system?
Alhamdulillah, I have an amazing support structure, and this allows me the freedom to attend and be a part of many initiatives.

How do we expand women’s networks to accommodate all women entrepreneurs?
By sharing our knowledge, discussing business solutions, ideas, promoting skills development.

How can we be a support system to the female business owners in our lives?
By firstly acknowledging that we are all different and come from different backgrounds. We need to understand that each business, each industry operates differently. We need to be supportive and encouraging. We need to share our resources and be willing to whole heartedly assist each other to grow and prosper.

If you have the ability to mentor another woman, will you consider it?
Absolutely! I would love to utilise my psychology degree to coach and mentor women in business and to help them create an effective and efficient organisation as well as a healthy work life balance.

What is your greatest failure? How did you turn your greatest failure into a learning experience?

What is your greatest failure? How did you turn your greatest failure into a learning experience?
We fail all the time. Each failure has its own magnitude and bears a certain weighting at that point in your life. The next failure may be greater or less than the previous one. I don’t believe in failure. I have the mindset that we go through different challenges in our lives at different points in our lives. We do the best we can with what we have at that’s time. Can we do better? Yes, of course but there is aways room for improvement. It’s all a learning curve.

What has changed since the last time we chatted you?

Everything! I have experienced many changes both in my personal and professional life. I got divorced and am Now remarried. Industrial psychologist, started a sleepwear brand called ELARA, run a filling station and have 2 food shows on DSTV.

What inspired you to start your own business?
At that point in my life, I had already started ELARA and that was working well but due to personal reasons I had to find a business that could sustain myself and my family and at the same time give me the flexibility to be a full-time mother.

A female owned petrol station is rarely heard off, tell us what made you go into that field of business and how has it been received?
My brother motivated me to make the move and go into the fuel industry. I took over the business during the Covid 19 pandemic and it came with many challenges. I have been able to navigate my way through the business and am making great progress.

What do you consider your greatest achievement in life?
Coming out of a dark past and not loosing myself but being able to grow despite all the challenges that I faced. I was able to build a life for myself and my family. A life that I am proud of.

If you could only change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I wouldn’t change anything. My weaknesses help me grow and become a better individual. One weakness in one area is my strength in another. The key is to be aware of the weakness and being able to identify how you can turn that weakness into your strength.

Meet Italian entrepreneur Manuela Pirola

“My career as a Stylist & Image Consultant: how it started…and how it is going. All the challenges I had (and still have) to face.”

Hello everyone! It has been an honour working with Covered as a contributor (and what a blessing it has been!), presenting contents on fashion, styling and providing interviews to great people and minds. But this time it seems a bit different for me, as I have been asked (and feeling so grateful for that) to introduce myself as an entrepreneur and speak about my job, my professional goals and, above all, the challenges I had to face (and still have) to succeed in my career as an Image Consultant, trying to scale my business internationally.

Manuela Pirola portrait

Let’s start from the very beginning. I was born in Italy, in a little village in the province of Milan, city to which I owe a lot in terms of education and open-mindedness. Fashion and colors have always been in my life as, in the 70s, my gradfather, a skillful craftsman, set up his own business as a trimmings manufacturer. it was the period of the Italian economic boom and, later on, my father and his brother further developed the activity, working on a global scale.
I can still remember the way those finely-made trimmings would come out like magic from the machines and the piles of colorful pieces stored in the warehouse, ready to be delivered. The family factory was also the place where I got familiar with laces, sequins and fabrics, which always caught my attention.

Manuela Pirola sitting in a chair

I graduated in foreign languages and journalism while helping my dad with the trade fairs abroad. I especially enjoyed the ones in Paris. For me, they were the perfect occasion to get in touch with clients from all over the world, learning a lot from different cultures. Growing older, besides working as an English teacher for the Italian Education Ministry, I got my international certification in Image Consulting and Bridal Styling, and I also decided to found my own fashion brand “Manuela Pirola Couture”. Today I pride myself with an international clientèle of ladies willing to improve their personal image and branding. I mainly operate in Italy (where I am based) and in the Middle Eastern countries, whose culture and traditions have always fascinated me.
Certainly, the way to success has not been easy (and still isn’t!). As a professional and solo entrepreneur, I had to cope with plenty of difficulties. First and foremost, while in the US, the career as a Stylist is officially recognized, in Europe it is not. There are no regulations and, for this reason, being an Image Consultant or Personal Shopper is like working in a sort of ‘Far West’, where everyone sets their own rules. On the other hand, especially in Italy, there is a lot of competition in this field and, if you want to keep up with the times and make your business run, you always need to come out with something innovative. You need to invest time and money in training and research in order to offer top-quality services at affordable rates. Definitely so far from being a piece of cake!

The hardest challenge I had to face was during the pandemic, especially the first lockdown. As an Image Consultant I was used to receiving my clients in person, both in Italy and on my trips abroad. Once lockdown began, I could no longer do so, and travel restrictions were also put into place. I really was afraid of losing everything I had created over the years, but I didn’t give up and eventually I found the way to go on and even increase my possibilities. In fact, while at school we were experiencing distance learning, I decided to do the same with my styling services and I managed to turn my in-presence business into an online one. First, I created online courses in Image Consulting and Fashion Styling, which I had the chance to run both in Italy and in the United Arab Emirates, where I started to collaborate with a few fashion academies. Afterwards I got familiar with a series of software’s and applications which allowed me to colour analyse and style people virtually.
This was the turning point: thanks to digital technologies, my services could now be available from everywhere in the world and I began to get contacted by clients from the Gulf countries, India and South Africa, thus becoming an internationally known professional. As far as I can see, styling services on a digital basis have gradually become a ‘must’ and are to be considered the ultimate frontier of Image Consulting. Cutting-edge tools and devices have been designed to face a new working reality and clients are 100% satisfied with their online experiences, as the contents provided are extremely accurate and fees contained.
No doubt my main goal for the near future is to further grow my online business, especially abroad, as for me working on a global scale is so fulfilling and motivating. What I love the most is dealing with clients from different ethnicities! My Multi-ethnic Digital Colour Analyses have become my signature and my Styling and Personal Branding services are now being recognised by well-known people from everywhere! MISSONI LIGHTS UP MILAN FASHION WEEK’S RUNWAY WITH ITS SS23 COLLECTION

The Missoni language, spoken in the present tense, by a new author. Lemmas that are added, that evolve and transform, in continuity with the past. Words that materialize here and now, speaking of today’s bodies and manners. An alphabet of meaningful letters, arranged in rigorously scattered order, like a ray of light that passes through a prism to be divided into the colors that form it. Dismantling to recompose, taking apart to recombine and finally recreate.

C for Color. The foundation of everything, in turn reduced to the fundamentals: yellow, magenta and cyan, the primaries; black and white, the graphic rhythm.
L for Light. The set of radiations perceived by the eye, transformed into visual sensations and emotions. The mobile container of all colors.
D for Discipline. A new mental order draws a clear, vertical, body conscious silhouette. Short, long, skintight; trousers with trains, cups that emphasize the bust, high slits.
P for Physicality. The body is tangible, sensual and joyful; it flickers, throbs, peaks a boo through transparencies, plunging necklines, openings.
P for Pattern. The motifs that are part of the collective imagination – fiammato, zig zig, stripes, patchwork, rachel – interpreted in new weights and techniques, to create a repertoire of patterns and surfaces. Everything is taut, elastic, to accompany the movements and highlight physicality.
K for Knots. Decorative knotted motifs drape clothes close to the body while symbolizing the continuity of past and present.
S for Shimmer. Sequins and crystals are mixed with color to add more light, and further refractions.
M for Monochrome. Color maximized in a single note, to vibrate and move, intensely.
A for Accessorizing. Glasses swarming with patterns, knitted boas, metallic jewels as highlights, small clutches, plexiglass mules.

I for Immediate. The speed and ease that come from spontaneity, for clothes meant to live the here and now.

E for Energy. Fashion as an injection of cheerfulness and lightness of spirit. Color and light that entice a smile.

A girl in a fetal position

A story of a young woman who wanted to feel whole again

We all have a story to tell. I am sharing a narrative of a beautiful lady Sam who feels alone. The negative voices in her head keep telling her that things will never change. She agrees to disagree most of the time, convincing herself that all will be ok, questioning if, she is imagining… much of her life…

A part of her feels exhausted, depleted of energy, numb and unworthiness sets in repeatedly. There are times she can’t get out of bed. It’s a daily struggle for Sam to wake up and wash her face or even brush her teeth. Then there are days she wishes she can just sleep through the pain and sadness and never wake up again.  This is the follow up to Sam’s story, to read the first part check out our September issue.

“She thought of acts that could numb her pain. The situation only got worse when losing her job. One morning she decided it was time … to remove herself from the pain that haunted her … “
Sam ruminated about ways she could end her life … and stepped onto the balcony on the 10th floor of her apartment building that overlooked the polluted city.
Her breath became shallow and for a moment she felt like the earth lost its force of gravity and everything around her started spinning rapidly. Her agitation, feelings of guilt and sadness engulfed her, and she journeyed back to the day that she had aborted her pregnancy.
Tears flowed uncontrollably and she imagined rocking her little baby, in her arms. If only she could turn back the clock and change her narrative.
Slowly, Sam stood up and leaned over the balcony thinking about how she could put an end to this deep feeling of pain and resentment she felt toward herself.
Suddenly … Sam’s phone rang. Her caller ID said DAD and Sam burst into tears.
Was Sam going to answer?

A girl crying

Sam froze and stepped back. She sat down on the floor and was shocked that her dad was calling her. She had not spoken to him for several years.
Was this a sign that she needed?
“Are you ok?” asked her dad.  Sam cried uncontrollably.
She hung up and then passed out.
She woke up later, surrounded by both her mom and dad.  They held her and reassured her that even though she felt alone and sad, they would never leave her side.
Did Sam get the help that was much needed?
Sam took several steps on the path to recovery and healing.
Sam’s parents took her for professional assistance. She consulted with a psychiatrist and was clinically diagnosed with depression. Individual and family therapy helped Sam work through the trauma she had encountered.
Coupled to this she also went for life coaching and conducted “journey work “which enabled her to step into her pain and heal from her painful memories from her past. Her friends, work colleagues and family members supported Sam throughout her healing & personal development journey. Sam also joined support groups that created a conducive space for her to share her experiences. Sam grew personally and professionally and started spending quality time with her family.  She started swimming and hiking which enabled her to keep fit and find time for herself. She nurtured her well-being and was kind and gentle with herself. She trusted in her creator and prayer as well as meditation also helped her stay grounded. The traumatic events in Sam’s life became the catalyst for her healing and growth.

Fast forward five years…Sam is surrounded by her children and family who adore her. She is a senior professional at a leading institution. She has also become more spiritual and prayer as well as meditation help her to stay grounded.  Today is a big day. Sam experiences deep gratitude and joy by adopting a little baby who was abandoned. Holding her babies’ tiny fingers, she tears and realises how precious life is … By stepping into her pain and working through her emotional struggle, she was able to process her trauma and heal gently.  Tears of joy give evidence that sometimes grief and sadness can be our best teachers in helping us heal. Sam learned to live alongside her grief and forgive herself and those around her. Self-compassion and forgiveness are Sam’s compass that navigates her to a space where she can live fully in the present moment and feel whole again.
Remember, that you are not alone. If you are feeling deeply distressed and having any suicidal tendencies or thoughts, please talk to someone immediately and reach out for support.

Gemfields

Gemfields brings to auction the Kafubu Cluster, a colossal 37,555-gram cluster of emeralds.

Discovered at the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia in March 2020, the Kafubu Cluster is a colossal cluster of emeralds. Close inspection of the 37,555-gram (187,775 carat) cluster reveals that it contains very little matrix or other minerals, meaning the piece is almost entirely made up of emeralds, which, given its sheer size and formation, makes this a very rare find indeed.

The Kafubu Cluster, our gentle giant, is a testament to the high-quality gemstones that can be produced when Mother Nature allows time for the various crystals to form deep within the Earth’s crust. Gemfields’ geologists describe the formation process of emeralds as an incredibly rare coming together of uncommon elements in unusual circumstances.

A precise set of remarkable geological and geochemical conditions is required for the formation of these brilliant green gems. Beryllium, essential for the crystallisation of beryl, is one of the most elusive elements in the Earth’s crust (estimated to be about 2 parts per million) and must be carried up to the surface by pegmatites, which, in turn, must come into contact with chromium and vanadium-bearing (ultramafic) rocks in order to attain the desired colour. Not all pegmatites are beryllium-bearing and even fewer are emplaced within rocks that contain adequate chromium. These factors – coupled with even more specific temperature, pressure and fluid content requirements for its formation – makes emerald extremely rare and remarkably erratic in its distribution.

A person holding a big quartz crystal

Zambian emeralds tend to have a higher iron content than emeralds from other origins, which means they are less fragile. High iron content also means fewer surface-reaching fractures and less need for treatments and enhancements. The careful process of recovering emeralds by hand at the Kagem emerald mine has enabled the safe recovery of some of the largest and most exceptional emeralds ever found, of which the Kafubu Cluster is an extraordinary example.

Just like Michelangelo was a “subtractive sculptor”, our geologists at Kagem have “freed the emerald crystals from their host rock”. The result is a large mass, filled with numerous individual and intertwined emerald crystals, displaying their perfect hexagonal structure.

Jackson Mtonga, Kagem Assistant Sort House Manager, who has 28 years of experience of emerald discoveries at Kagem, paid testimony to the incredible nature of this find: “Rarity is one of the factors that makes emeralds hold such a special value in many cultures around the world, but the combination of this crystal cluster formation, the overall quality and the sheer enormity of the Kafubu Cluster is something I never thought possible.”

The Kafubu Cluster displays all the desired characteristics that an emerald should possess: a vivid green colour overall that glows and shines. It offers different levels of perfect crystallisation, to allow the future cutter to create a collection of gems, from fine quality faceting material to cabochons and beads for everyday fun. It is possible that a customer may decide to preserve this in its natural form or cut the piece to yield tens of thousands of carats of commercial to fine quality cut emeralds.

The Kafubu Cluster is being offered for sale at Gemfields’ upcoming emerald auction, with viewing from 31 October and bidding closing on 17 November. Given its size and quality, it is possible that the Kafubu Cluster will be the most expensive single emerald piece ever sold by Gemfields.

The naming of uncut emeralds is a tradition reserved only for the rarest and most remarkable gems. While no official record exists, it is thought that no more than two dozen gemstones have ever been given their own name, and it is extremely unusual to encounter a gemstone weighing more than 1,000 carats. Unlike Insofu (elephant), Inkalamu (lion) and Chipembele (rhino), the Kafubu Cluster is not one single crystal and is completely unique in character. As such, it calls for a name as inimitable as it is.

The Kafubu Cluster was discovered in the Chama pit of the Kagem emerald mine, based in Lufwanyama in Zambia. Kafubu is a river which forms the natural boundary of Kagem in the southern part of the Kagem licence, and it is from this that the Kafubu Cluster takes its name – honouring the unique landscape in which it was formed. Kagem is believed to be the world’s single largest producing emerald mine; it is 75% owned by Gemfields, in a model partnership with the Zambian government.

Gemfields’ How to Buy Coloured Gemstones Guide – Defining the 6 Cs

When it comes to buying coloured gemstones, there are a host of factors to consider – and not all of them are obvious. Some of these relate to aesthetics, while others are about ensuring the provenance of the gem, but all are equally significant. The complexity of the gemstone buying process, in many ways, mirrors the miraculous set of circumstances that was required for these extraordinary quirks of nature to form. Ascribed mystical qualities since ancient times, emeralds and rubies are no ordinary purchase: they are lasting, and so it is important to pore over every detail before deciding on ‘The One’.

A gemstone purchase visual guide

Take time to fall in love…
Far and away the most important rule of buying is for the prospective buyer to – quite literally – choose the gemstone that they fall in love with, rather than opting for the one they think they should like. This may be a less ‘perfect’ gemstone – and in fact, its little quirks may be the very thing that makes the buyer fall for it.

Inclusions keep it real…
Perfection is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to gemstones, which were carved from Mother Nature and formed deep beneath the earth’s surface millions of years ago. Inclusions – as they are called in the industry – are the little features that prove that a gemstone is authentic, and that no two are exactly the same. These are to be celebrated.

Opt for an even colour…
What is worth insisting upon when shopping for a coloured gemstone evenness of colour and good saturation throughout the gemstone is. This is typically associated with a higher value, higher quality gem (unless it came about as the result of colour enhancement).

View gemstones in daylight…
The importance of seeing clearly when it comes to choosing a gemstone cannot be underestimated. When shopping for an emerald or ruby, a buyer would be best advised to try to see it in daylight, so that its colour is not affected by artificial light.

6 Cs to remember…
Colourless diamonds have long been measured by the 4 Cs – colour, cut, clarity and carat – and there are two more added to the mix for coloured gemstones: character and certification. These 6 Cs are as good a guide as there is to be making an informed decision – and also a snappy way to remember the basic rules of the game!

Trust the brand…
Gemstones should always be purchased from a trusted supplier – someone who is known or has come through a personal recommendation perhaps. This will give the buyer peace of mind that their gemstone has been responsibly sourced and is of the quality described.

Get it in writing…
Especially if a gemstone is of a significant size, it is important to request a lab report – verifying its origins and disclosing any treatments it may have received – from a certified gemmological laboratory, something that all reputable labs will be happy to provide. Traceability records provide a complete picture of the journey a gemstone has travelled to reach its final destination (in a beautiful piece of jewellery).

Do your homework…
It is important to ask questions and do research when finding a gemstone to buy. Responsible sourcing and sustainability are hot topics today, and jewellery brands, many with their own in-house gemmologist teams, will be able to supply plenty of information. There are many credible sources – like jewellery experts, gemmological labs and industry bodies – on hand to answer questions.

Know your gem’s journey…
Every gemstone is a tiny miracle and completely unique in terms of its character and the journey it has taken. It’s often said the right gem will find its owner. Buyers who follow this advice and do their homework will certainly help the process along.

Navjot Altaf: Pattern

14th September – 9th December 2022

Ishara Art Foundation presents Pattern, the first solo exhibition of artist Navjot Altaf in the Arabian Peninsula.

Featuring site-specific installations, sculptures, videos, drawings and photo prints, the exhibition foregrounds Navjot’s longstanding commitment to issues of climate-change, ecology and feminism and the challenges they face in the digital age.

Navjot Altaf art installation

Navjot Altaf’s practice stands at the intersection of art and activism. With a career spanning over five decades, she is among the leading voices of her generation to regard art as a medium of social change. Formerly based in Bombay, Navjot relocated to Bastar in the rural districts of Central India during the late 1990’s to work with indigenous artists and communities that have borne witness to the enormous scale of deforestation, mining, pollution and displacement. Through collaborations with artists, activists, workers and organisations, her projects trace the complex connections between human exploitation and environmental crises that lie at the heart of climate change today.

Pattern presents works by Navjot created since 2015, the year of the United Nations Climate Change Conference and the Paris Climate Accords. These events marked a watershed moment in announcing a global agreement towards the mitigation of carbon emission levels among nearly 200 countries. Since then, there has been a dramatic enhancement of visual representation of climate change in mainstream media, using new technologies and real-time data. Navjot’s exhibition at Ishara juxtaposes the new and traditional forms of representing environmental crises to critically reflect on the way we think about the future of the planet and society.

Consisting of 6 notable bodies of work, the viewer is first confronted by ‘How Perfect Perfection Can Be’, an immersive presentation of multi-layered works comprising prints, watercolour drawings and PVC transfers that reveal the paradox between the great accomplishments of modern architecture and their adverse impact on the planet. With intricate details of building facades of mega-cities such as New York superimposed with abstract graphs intimating the corresponding ecological destruction, the works question the value of human achievement and visual splendour that are simultaneously symbols of society’s collective failure towards the environment.

The adjoining wall amplifies the statistical information seen in the previous work into bold lines that track seven indices of ecological disasters collected from 2011 onwards in the work titled ‘Seriousness of Issues’. First presented in 2015 in the wake of the Paris Accords, the ongoing work is updated with each iteration using new data released by major scientific organisations. Dwarfed by the scale of the mural, the viewer encounters a new metaphor for the horizon in the 21st century through jagged lines mapping the shortage of fresh-water, rise in air and water pollution and depletion of natural resources. According to Navjot, this abstract representation of the environment has dehumanized our approach to fully grasp the magnitude of devastation and displacement of several species caused by excessive industrialization over many decades.

Navjot Altaf art installation

‘Lost Text’ is a series of 36 layered digital prints that explore the visual aesthetics of antiquated scripts in the digital age. Creating a dialogue between archaeology and new techniques of data-mining, photographs of ancient hieroglyphs are juxtaposed with digital encryptions generated from a corrupt computer hard-drive containing documentation from Navjot’s Bastar diaries. The work foregrounds the vulnerability of analogue and digital sources of knowledge and the human perseverance to decipher.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is an installation titled eponymously with the show, ‘Pattern’, made out of unmilled red rice. Displayed on the floor, the work is modelled on an indigenous pattern produced from sophisticated techniques of weaving, separating threads on a loom. The use of rice and the invocation of textiles symbolise the interconnectedness of artistic expression, occupation and livelihood and the dependence on the earth among farmers that have lost their land to mining companies.

‘Soul Breath Wind’ isa multi-channel video based on the artist’s comprehensive research and first-hand observation of how the political, economic and development policies have led to deep geological impact in Chhattisgarh in Central India. The video presents the testimonies of local inhabitants, several of whom include women speaking against the monopolisation of land, rapid industrialisation, and the extreme conditions of displacement and deforestation brought on by coal and bauxite mining. The video extends into the final work in the exhibition titled ‘Patterns Which Connect’, a collection of 24 fossil-like sculptures embodying the diverse ecosystem that is under threat due to the continuously changing landscape.

Navjot creates works over long durations of time, exploring new and old knowledge systems, traditions and personal experiences to offer a new approach to environmental philosophy. The exhibition at Ishara highlights the multiple dimensions of her practice through her artworks along with a reading space on the mezzanine that presents books, field notes, and posters of various social movements she has been part of over the years.

Navjot Altaf: Pattern is curated by Sabih Ahmed, Associate Director and Curator at the Ishara Art Foundation. The exhibition will be accompanied by the launch of her new two-volume book titled ‘Navjot at Work’ and ‘Artist’s Notes’; physical and virtual tours; educational and public programmes; a newly commissioned text by Zasha Colah and artist conversations over the duration of the exhibit.

Smita Prabhakar, Founder and Chairperson of Ishara Art Foundation, comments: “Once again Ishara presents a contemporary artist from South Asia not seen before in the region. Navjot is a feminist and has great belief in the intrinsic values of equality and non-discrimination against minorities. Her work with tribals in the Bastar region in Central India and focus on sustainability are at the forefront of discussions in the world today. With this exhibition Ishara will showcase our commitment to issues that impact us as world citizens and share a practice which is impactful and forceful in its message.”

PRESENTS SPRING SUMMER ‘23 COLLECTION AT MILAN FASHION WEEK

Bold and glamourous, Gianvito Rossi’s Spring Summer 2023 collection plays on the notion of strength and sophistication. The codes of the house glimmer with daring femininity as the designer plays with his clean, lean and graphic silhouettes. Sensual after-dark boots, gladiator bejewelled sandals and striking platform mules call for attention.

With a “punkish” allure, jet-black leather and sparkling details define the stylish designs. Seductive crystal chains, with the signature Ribbon Buckle, add an audacious touch to slouchy pointy-toe boots and booties, whilst on d’Orsay lace-up pumps the crystal detail is imagined as a new shimmering “stud” to be worn over the naked foot.

And then more: refracting crystals, embedded in three slender bands of pointy-toe sandals and platform mules, strike the light with dramatic flair.

Audacious and feminine, each creation of the Spring Summer 2023 collection represents an instant distillation of Gianvito Rossi’s trademark style.

Business Entrepreneur Strategy Workshop held on the 29th of October at the Café Riviera in Killarney Mall in Johannesburg, South Africa.

It was a gloomy Saturday morning, and despite the terror attack warning the US government issued a few days prior, the venue was filling up with female attendees that were eager to gain insight into the ways of creating their own businesses. Covered Official introduced its first business workshop to inspire women to become entrepreneurs and follow their dreams.

Business Entrepreneur Strategy Workshop speakers

The outcome was phenomenal, with a diverse audience of women sharing their journeys into the world of business. Our founder and editor-in-chief opened up by introducing the dynamic panel of women who were courageous enough to share their narratives with the audience. Yesmien KT (the host) spoke beautifully on how women are built on emotion and how these emotions come into play in the business world, how we need to unite as a sisterhood to support each other. She then handed over to the inspiring Jae Scott, who was the emcee and facilitator for the morning. Jae, being the publisher of Passion to Purpose International women’s magazine and conference, the former vice president of public relations at New York Toastmasters, a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a Forbes under 30 2017 nominee, and an inspirational speaker, perfectly introduced the panel and led an interesting line-up of questions that had our panelists in conversation for the next few hours, and oh, how we love conversation.

Koo Govender, CEO of Dentsu South Africa and founder of Female Foundry in South Africa (A Dentsu Initiative), which was established to bridge the gap in gender parity, especially in emerging markets, by offering experienced training and mentorship to empower and develop the skills of female entrepreneurs, spoke eloquently about her passion to see women of color supporting each other in the business sector and how we should come together without judgement. Sharing her personal story about losing her husband early this year ignited the discussion even further, as that was one of the reasons panelist Fairuz Amgee started her own aesthetic beauty salon. After the loss of her husband, Fairuz decided to start her own business. Possessing a flare for cosmetology, she opened up a premium luxury hair removal and skin aesthetics salon located in Illovo – Sandton. Fairuz is proof that sharing her journey and the ups and downs she has experienced is one of the keys to success. Suraya Desai, a qualified fashion designer who successfully ran her own manufacturing factory for over 20 years, shared her passion for mentorship and assisting women from all backgrounds in uplifting themselves and finding ways to create employment by nurturing their skills and talent. Suraya spoke passionately about helping women in her community, be it with funds or mentorship. Zoey Mikaela, the executive director of Volumicious Hair Solutions, had our audience in awe as she shared her very real “rags to riches” story. Zoey has a passion for empowering others. Having gone through many challenging years and conquered suicidal thoughts and feelings of failure as a result of life’s challenges, she strongly believes that everyone can overcome life’s challenges with a positive mind-set. From selling her product after hours from the boot of her car at shopping malls, Zoey now owns her own hair clinic and employs 10 full-time staff members. The business also empowers over 150 independent distributors, both locally and outside the country, has 1 store in Durban, and offers franchising opportunities. Zoey defines all odds and shows that hard work does pay off in the end.
